The strong, quiet type
This garbage disposal was worth every penny. I have met a lot of garbage disposals in my life and this one has actually managed to make me feel happy when I use it. It is quiet, as far as garbage disposals go. Our old one, a KitchenAid 1 HP, sounded like we were grinding bones and rocks no matter what we put into it. This one? Super quiet. I have put all manner of vegetation down the disposal and it has made quick work of it without a hint of it possibly thinking about getting plugged up. The KitchenAid had a tough time with stems and leafy things. The InSinkErator chews them up and has no issues. I am curious how it will perform as it ages, but as of right now, I am very happy with how it works. My husband and I went back and forth over which HP we should go with, however, we have found that the 7/8 HP is plenty of power. And it was an easy install for my husband to do. I highly recommend this garbage disposal. I hope we have many happy years together.

Even the handyman was impressed!
I bought this model because it was recommended to me by my plumbers. However, they wanted so much money for the unit and the installation that I decided to see if I could buy it elsewhere and get it installed by someone else. So I looked on amazon, and it was there! I picked the buying choice that was eligible for Prime, so I had it in 2 days. (I am puzzled by the current notation that says "Usually ships within 2 to 3 months.") I called a handyman I use regularly and he came out to install it. By doing these two simple things, I saved almost $300 compared to what the plumbers wanted! But that's not actually why I'm writing this review...I'm writing this review because the handyman took one look at the unit and commented immediately on how attractive it is, how powerful it is, and -- once he had it installed -- how QUIET it is. And this is all true, but especially, it's amazingly quiet. If one day I had turned on my old unit and it had been this quiet, I would have assumed it wasn't even working. (By the way, my old disposal cracked at the bottom, thus necessitating buying a new one.)So far, this has been an amazing purchase. The unit is very attractive (not that anyone is going to see it but me) and very quiet. The installation instructions were very clear, all the necessary parts were in the box (more about that in a minute) and the whole transaction was just as pleasant as can be. The handyman installed it without a hitch. Afterwards my husband said he wished he'd looked at the instructions before we called the handyman because they were so well written, he might have tried installing it himself. The only thing I want to point out is that this model comes without a power cord. This is because if you are simply replacing an existing disposal, as I was, you probably already have a power cord (apparently they are a universal size) and so purchasing a new one would just be a waste of money. However, if you are replacing the kind of disposal that is hard-wired directly into your wall you will need a power cord kit and if so, the product page mentions what kind you will need. The kit only costs about $10.You can choose to buy directly from the seller or (if you click "see further buying choices") from amazon. There's only a few dollars' difference either way.

Great product. Quiet and powerful.
I love my new garbage disposal!!!! It is very sharp and very quiet. This is the second one I have had but our last one did not have as much power. This one would probably chop Anything but I do not intend to try it. My plumber saidIt was quite easy to install as well. It was carefully packed for protection coming from the vender.Good appliance.

Product leaked. Replaced identical product seized up. Fortunately Emerson made good on warranty and replaced with Evolution 1300. So far so good.

2 on the InSinkErator quiet scale (1 being the best) - easy to install with 8 year warranty
It is clearly 40% quieter than a standard disposal (the box gave it a 2 on the InSinkErator quiet scale), but InSinkErator does make models that are noticeably quieter than this one (I know, my sister has one you can barley hear). Just want to make that clear as some posts rave about how quiet it is (also only reason I can't say I love it and give it 5 stars). The very old Kenmore I was replacing was in a small side sink, so space was a concern for me and the few models that claim that they were the quietest (i.e. InSinkErator Evolution Excel 1.0) also appeared to be much bigger. Otherwise I would have gone with the quietest model as that was my number one feature I was looking for. Price was right, 8 year warranty better than other models and it was easy to install (took me about a hour once I got the old one out). I was right to be concerned about space as I have less than 1/4" space to the side wall of cabinet. The old one was rusted in, so that took longer to remove than I had hoped (about a hour also). Please note: The box this came in says that the Pro1100XL is even quieter (ultra-quiet). ON amazon, it also appears to be smaller. However, the amazon product description says only 40% quieter (same as this model). Now the Pro1100XL is $150 more, but it has a 12 year warranty and if I could have verified that it was truly quieter than I would have bought it had I known. A little too late now (for me and for InSinkErator) now that I have installed it. Worth investigating if you too have limited space but you want super quiet. Finally, I do wish that Amazon would use the same quiet scale among all disposals for rating the quietness (i.e. in some cases they used a number scale (i.e. 1, 2 or 3) while others state 40% quieter and still others don't really say). Also wished that Amazon could then take a standardized quiet rating to allow customer's to search based upon the quietness rating. Had they done so, they would have sold me a more expensive model.
