Great for Homeschoolers
I bought the first 3 series of these kits to help my son in science, as we homeschool. He is in third grade, and has already really covered some of this stuff, but this is a great tool to motivate him. He really enjoys using these science kits, and they come complete with everything you need to perform any experiments. He really enjoyed learning how to make paper, and now he has the materials to continue making paper whenever he wants to. He also loved the magnet experiments. I enjoyed the seeds, growing beans and wheat and learning how to graph on a chart, which coincided perfectly with math graphing. Anyway, with each kit you get 3 major "themes" and within each theme you get at least two experiments, sometimes many more. Therefore, if you use these kits regularly they will keep your little scientist very busy! I plan on buying each and every one of them, they arrived in a timely manner, they are packaged nicely in neat boxes, they include all the materials, along with a work packet for the child and a guide for the teacher/parent. They are worth the price.

Worth the money.
My kids (ages 5 & 8, whom I homeschool) and I are working our way through the Young Scientist Kits, and just completed the last kit in this set. It contained three kits: one to learn about the Mohs hardness scale and test the hardness of certain rocks, one to grow salt and sugar crystals and learn about different crystal shapes, and one to learn about how fossils are formed and create a mold and cast fossil of a little plastic dinosaur.Everything we needed was in the kits aside from things like bowls and jars or other small household items that nearly everybody would probably have on hand anyway, like measuring spoons. We benefitted from having access to a microscope, and supplemented the units with a visit to a local science museum with a fantastic mineral and fossil collection.I gave this kit 4 stars instead of 5 stars because the rocks that were included to test with the Mohs hardness scale were not good samples. The magnetite was not magnetic, and the calcite did not fizz when dropped in white vinegar like it was supposed to. We got a better quality rock testing kit elsewhere and had much better results. The experiments in this and all of the Young Scientist kits that we've done so far would be very easy to reproduce without buying the kits, but I don't mind spending the money (it works out to about $5 per kit) to use as a spring board to introduce basic topics to my children, gauge their interest, and go from there.

Needs cheep lab equipment, not included
Not all the equipment is included.Needs a test tube, graduated beaker and other inexpensive items. I would be willing to pay an extra 5$ for those. Was disappointing at Christmas when my daughter wanted to use it

Can't beat the knowledge and activities for the price!
For the price I was impressed with the all the experiments for learning. We did the experiments From series 8 kit 25 magnetism and then followed up with magic school bus videos and Bill Nye videos to learn even more with each kits.Yes the items are simple, some inadequate and you might have to skip or adjust (our lodestone wasn't magnetic and the kids started to write that down under the question "is lodestone magnetic?" !!! I had to explain yes it is, this one just isn't lodestone or at some point it got demagnetized.) we didn't have bottle caps for the magnetic boats either.I made sure to look over each kit and make sure I had enough supplies for my three kids (missed a couple supplies though), or if the included supplies couldn't be divided up. If not I just have each kid a task (one reads, one writes, one puts together, and swap every so often) they all enjoyed it. Definitely for younger kids who haven't leaned much science yet.

Love this Science kit!
My kids & I love to do science experiments; however, when you are looking them up on-line or in a book, chances are you don't have all the necessary items to complete the experiment. Then I found this kit & I love it! It comes with all of the necessary items needed to complete each experiment. The kit comes with three topics (all somewhat related), the necessary items to complete the activities for each topic, and directions (both for the adult & then simpler ones to read to the child while completing the activities). My only suggestion is to read the adult directions in advance, so you have a good idea of the activities before the little ones join in to help. I have purchased several of these kits & I plan on buying them all!

Materials did not function as described
So far we've only done the Minerals part (kit 8) and were disappointed. The activity is to identify the five provided minerals based on their properties. However, the "magnetite" sample was not magnetic. The "calcite" sample did not make bubbles in vinegar. Quartz was clearly able to be abraded by the coin. All of these are counter to what the booklet says is supposed to happen. It's not a total loss - we still had a discussion about different minerals having different properties - but the whole "mineral detective" concept was a flop, making it less fun.

Aside from that the kit is great.
Every time we have tried mixing the gelatin for the bacteria swabs it comes out a little runny. We use our own measurements to get it to be a firm gel to rub our swabs onto. Aside from that the kit is great.

Love that you can buy a set of 3 for ...
Love that you can buy a set of 3 for $15 instead of the $20/month subscription for one. Like that so far it's worldview neutral. Most of the experiments have worked as they should with just a couple that went awry (that could be our errors though to be fair!). Good explanations and clear instructions. Using for my homeschool science curriculum this year.

KIT MAGNETISM STATIC ELECTRICITY : Say NO!
I bought this product for the purpose of using it as a teaching aid for my 8 year old son. I had high hopes. In the magnetism kit, there were supposed to be 2 ring magnates, 1 bar magnate (which broke in two pieces as I tried to unstick it from the other magnates. The two supposedly "ring" magnates in fact did not have holes in them so the were just flat round shapes.I nonetheless tried to pesevere and tried to show the magnetic lines of force by sprinkling the iron filings on a piece of paper. Except the iron filings were more like powder and being too fine simply coallesced into a amorphous mass and there fore could not see anything after putting the magnates under the paper. I gave up on this.I went next to the experiment that is meant to show that warm atmosphere rises above the cold part. This experiment involves filling one glass with, as its describes, very hot water, and the other glass with very cold water. So, you are supposed to pu some dye in the hot water (food colouring) fill it to the brim and then cover it with the cardboard square provided. Then turn the glass with the very hot water together with the cardboard cover (which by now was beginning soak through and droop)you have to turn the glass over, and providing you have not scolde yourself, plave it on top of the cold want glass and then remove the cardboard from between them to show that the hot coloured water stays on top of the cold water. Unfortunately the cardboard was so soaked that the hot water spilled ou of the glass. At least I was wearing glass. My son had a good laugh, got bored and went to play elsewhere, leaving me to clean up the mess.I paid nearly £50 for this kit which I would not value at more than £10 on a good day. A total rip-off.Buyer beware!
