Pro's and Con's
I'm late to the party and was still using my Acid Deep Cycle battery because i'm old school. I bought a Kayak recently and wanted to use a trolling motor.. The Acid battery which weighs in a a whopping 70lbs is a bit too much for weight distribution of the kayak and not to mention the wear and tear on my poor back. I decided to opt for a Li Fe P04 battery. Didn't know at the time how flooded the market on Amazon is for this type of battery. You could spend hours and hours looking at all the reviews. Which one is best ? Who knows anymore they all have good and bad reviews. I will tell you based on my experience with this brand The Kepworth 12.8V 100 AH . I needed something rated deep cycle due to continuous use and recharging. I also needed one rated with enough AH ( amp hours ) to keep me on the water the longest without breaking the bank. I had to do the math. My Newport Vessels (NV) 55 lb thrust trolling motor draws 52A at full speed. A 100Ah battery can run it at full speed for nearly 2 hours. However, trolling motors are rarely used continuously at top speed. Properly managed, a 100Ah battery can power the motor all day on the water... Well that's what I thought until.. I was on the water and this battery was at Zero % after only running it for about 1 1/2 hour a full speed. I wasn't paying attention and was left stranded about 800 yards from shore. I was lucky to have had my Paddle. Anyway.. The battery performance was adequate for what I used it for. Which brings me to my #1 gripe regarding the charger and lack of instructions. The charger has only 1 led light which indicates power is on and it was lit up in " RED " I left this charge on overnight and next day power light was still " RED " Surely it doesn't take 16 hours to charge.. So i started looking for information and finally found out the problem... like I said i'm new to lithium batteries. If you ever take a LiFe P04 down to " ZERO " percent the BMS will not register when you plug up the charger. The charger needs to know what AMP to recharge the cells.. without the BMS indicating this information... the charger will sit idle with power on but not power drawn. Lucky I had my original 12v Acid battery still , I just hooked up my cars jumper cables and connected my two batteries and basically Jump Started the supplied charger. The BMS on the LiFe P04 was pulling 12volts from my Acid Battery and the charger then engaged re-charging the dead battery. Disconnected the jump cables and let it charge up. The indicator light after 8 hours went from Red to Green. Volt meter confirms 100% charge . So is this a good battery ? Time will tell. I can only confirm is does work for my needs and since i'm in no shape to paddle 800 yards again.. I went ahead and bought a 2nd KEPWORTH 12.8V 100Ah LiFePO4 Battery . Hope this helps.
