I have no idea from which tomatoes this paste is made. However, anytime you concentrate a sugar containing product you also increase the sweetness. The paste is sweet/very sweet. As to a direct comparison with San Marzano tomatoes...you will have to make that comparison yourself and decide.

I ordered the case of 12 and it was about 24 bucks, iirc.

Don't know the brand you mentioned but Mutti is a double paste and a very good one. It gives some cooked tomato chemistry without being over-concentrated. It still tastes like fresh concentrate and not deeply reduced like a triple paste. Very bright red and not ruddy.
