Not what it says
I used this unit to trace sprinkler valve wires 10 inches down. Could not trace crap. It worked at 4 inches not much more than that

Better than expected....
Great price and worth the value. Not a wonderful unit, but gave me a rough idea where my wire was. Its about 8 inches underground. Worth the 1 time use.

Did Not Detect Underground Electrical Lines
I purchased this product to trace my private electric lines to two outside lamps. The hook up was easy enough, and I was able to connect to a copper ground cable that serves as a lightning rod. The device worked above ground fine, and it made a loud enough noise, but the problem is that it was unable to detect the underground cables. I don't know how deep are those underground cables, but I doubt they are deeper than 3 feet. This product may work on shallow underground lines, but I don't know. Maybe an expensive version would work, but I'm not willing to try one of those either.
