At last, a pepper mill that works!

Lovely pepper mill, grinds very consistently and the adjustment is precise and effective -- and the range from coarse to extra fine is superb. The traditional shape is excellent and the black lacquer finish is classy.Inside the top of the mill there is a plastic part to help guide the pepper into the cavity and support the shaft, which means that you can fit a little more pepper into the mill than the diminutive size would suggest!The shaft itself is cylindrical, with a flattened section to mate with the cap, which looks much more robust than the typical square section shaft, which in my experience tend to round off all too easily.My only real qualm is that the adjustment can be somewhat difficult to turn towards the most fine settings. This is because turning the adjustment ring moves the two grinding rings closer together or further apart, and if any pepper is left in the mechanism then moving the rings closer together will have to crush the pepper or force it out of the way, meaning that there can be quite a lot of resistance in the adjustment action unless you make sure (with a tap or a shake) that there isn't any pepper left in the grinder.

I feel this is the start of a lifelong, beautiful relationship.Perhaps you're wondering whehter you can really justify spending this much on a pepper grinder? My advice: just do it. I've spent decades living with disappointing pepper grinders that cost not much less than this (though they may have been bigger) and either fail after a year or two or never even grind that well to start with. I've had ceramic, metal and plastic mills (the plastic was actually the best). It's really astonishing how much you can spend on a pepper grinder and still get a piece of crap, frankly.But Pergeot have produced a seriously well-engineered mill (as they have been doing since the 19th century!). I love the 6-level grind adjuster on the bottom. And the wood is beautifully finished - feels like silk in the hands. Every use is a pleasure.Ergonomically, it's a tad small - you might want to consider the next size up if your budget stretches to it.Oh yes, and it comes with free peppercorns :)

We bought salt and pepper grinders. As you can see, they do not match at all, which at this price isn't acceptable, so returning.It's a shame, because the mechanisms are great, but at this price quality musy include the finish too

Kitchen use

Great pepper mill. Feels solid in the hand, very satisfying mechanism and it gets through pepper like nobody’s business. If I could go back I might have got a bigger size, but maybe only having a small amount of pepper in it at a time means fresher pepper, who knows. Honestly it just makes me happy every time I use it, would recommend it to anyone.
