Q: Could I use this in my pool?

I do not have a pool but the stool is 100 percent plastic so I cant see why not.

Q: What prevents it from expanding by itself by gravity if held horizontally when carrying it?

A twisting motion activates the opening and closing. This is a great little stool if you are anticipating standing in line to attend an event

No idea- but the stool is so great!

Q: Can this be used as a travel shower stool?

It could but if you are frail or unsteady it would not be good
