The Chronology of the Old Testament (Book)

Think about how to view the charts before reading...
The Chronology of the Old Testament by Floyd Jones is true to God's pure and preserved Word, the authorized version (King James Version) of the Bible. It is difficult to trust other chronologies that do not start with the solid foundation that God has given us a Bible with no mistakes or errors. This reason alone was all I needed. What's more, the book is very thorough and easy for me to read and wrap my head around some of the more difficult concepts of Biblical Chronology. Before you buy though, consider thinking through the following... The software to view the charts is included on a CD fixed to the inside back cover. However, the author and I highly recommend being able to look at the charts as you read through the book. There are at least three options that I am aware of for viewing the charts.1) Read the book next to your desktop/laptop computer. Since I like do my reading on the sofa without a computer, this does not work for me.2) Print the charts using the above software. Being in a time crunch and for several other reasons, I chose this option. Based on experience, printing the charts is no easy task. For instance, Chart 5 measures ten inches by ten feet. Yes, that was ten feet (as in 120 inches). Unless you have a really long piece of paper, you will use up about 25 8-1/2 x 11 letter-sized sheets of paper. The good news is that printing the wall-sized charts can be done with the included software. Simply zoom in, print, pan right, print, pan right, print, etc. I then used a paper trimmer to match the right side of the current page with the left side of the next page. I then proceeded to use an entire roll of clear scotch tape to join the pages together. Place the tape across the front of the first joint and across the back of the second joint alternating until all sheets are combined. Upon completion, I ended up with a foldable frugal full-sized chart.3) Buy full-size prints of the charts. The charts are $39.95 (US) plus shipping and handling. They are available from the Digital Vault at A&E - The Graphics Complex. They can be contacted in any of the following ways:Telephone: 713-579-1234Toll Free: 888-621-0022 (ask for the Digital Vault)Fax: 713-966-8525E-Mail: [email protected]: Attn: Digital VaultA&E - The Graphics ComplexP.O. Box 27286Houston, Texas 77227Reference "Floyd Jones Charts" when ordering. Each chart is printed on 11" wide, bright white 20# bond, folded at 8-1/2" intervals so that each chart folds and stacks to a size no larger than 8-1/2 x 11".

Timeline of God's History of Chosen People
Author Dr. Floyd Jones has a talent for telling his story in a very blunt way -- While complimenting many of the others who have tried to solve a sometimes bewildering Old Testament chronology, he demonstrates his unique solution to seemingly contradictory previous timelines from such as Sir Isaac Newton, Dr. Edwin Thiele, and the authors of the Septuagint (LXX), the Greek translators, and Josephus. Jones has a talent for tabulating his chronology by using graphical "triangulation" that clearly demonstrates his solutions on over a dozen charts and tables [and includes such charts in both the book and on a CD that comes with his book of 321 pages] -- This method makes his thesis transparent to readers across a wide spectrum of training. Another important aspect of his analysis is his "Biblicist" decision to give the final word to the King James Version (KJV) as the unfailing accurate Word of God. He acknowledges and cites many other sources: the Assyrian School, Persian and Mede tables and stelea, Egyptian records and carvings and Ptolemaic writings. There is much agreement with selected other sources, yet he is always faithful to his "biblicist" viewpoint. There are surprises for almost anyone to learn from his elaborate, accurate analyses: Did you know that Patriarch Jacob was 77 years old when he left home to work 14 years in exchange for his wives for his uncle Laban in Haran? When Jacob left to sojourn in Egypt, he was 130 -- he died at 147 years. What was the actual identity of Babylonian King Cyrus who provided the written order to rebuild the Jerusalem Temple, destroyed in 586 BC? Was there just one Ezra and one Nehemiah (yes to both). Does Daniel the Prophet give a date for the destruction of the great Temple? These are the kinds of details that come from Jones' charts, along with the actual dates. Jones' work makes all of this come alive. [For other details, read the review by Lisa.]

Every Christian Needs This Book
I purchased the first version of this book several years ago after reading one of Dr. Jones' other books "Which Version is the Bible?". Dr. Jones is a careful thinker and his works have been very useful in my studies. I recently wanted to get my pastor a great book and when I saw that there was an updated version of this work, I ordered two (one for myself). This book has helped me better understand some simple and yet often incorrectly taught subjects. One of the first notable items was incorrectly believing that Jacob waited (as apposed to just serving) 7 extra years before marrying Rachel. I had heard this sermon/teaching many times over the years. Using chronology, Dr. Jones explains away this myth and shows how such a belief makes the ages of his children unreasonably young during the events of their lives.Additionally, my wife and I were watching a nativity movie this past December and started to discuss when it was the Wise Men came to see Jesus. She had heard (a popular) teaching stating that it was roughly 2 years after His birth and I thought otherwise. The answer was fairly simple (not two years later) but it isn't hard to see why people can get the wrong ideas when checking other resources. The "Holman Book of Biblical Charts, Maps and..." incorrectly shows the presentation of Jesus in the Temple before visit of the Wise Men (supposedly 2 years later).Dr. Jones again breaks it down and shows how The family was visited by the Wise Men, went to Egypt (during which Herod dies) and returned to the Temple in time (less then 40 days) to present Jesus in the Temple after Mary's days of purification were complete. After that, they returned to their home in Nazareth and not Bethlehem where Joseph was warned to flee to Egypt. There is obviously more detail to the above examples but hopefully you the reader get the idea that this book is very much worth your while if you want to understand and most importantly BELIEVE everything you read in your Bible.

A valuable resource!
I have owned this book for nearly three years and it continues to yield its treasure.Using the biblical record, the author places people and events within their time frame and in their proper sequence while addressing the challenges (for example, the theory of evolution) to the chronological framework of the Bible. Dr Floyd Jones in the opening title, 'Establishing the Correct Foundation', discusses the two key world views and their effect on biblical chronology.A CD included with 'Chronology of the Old Testament), contains the six charts that are discussed comprehensively in the book. Discussions include: The date of creation; David's age at his slaying of Goliath and Daniel's 483 year prophecy specifying the time of the Saviour's birth, ministry and crucifixion. Over fifty illustrations and diagrams (for example: The Kings of Israel; Job's chronology; and Returning exiles listings comparison in Ezra and Nehemiah) offer further clarification and insight. This is a scholarly and fascinating piece of research establishing the total accuracy, truth and historical authenticity of the Bible. Highly recommended.
