For all the money you could spend on regulating your pits temperature this does it for a fraction of the cost. There's a bit of trial and error at first while you get used to it and the outside temperature does effect it but for the price it's an absolute no brainer.

I originally spotted this item on a YouTube video a few years back. It takes a cook or 2 to get the just of how this works. But if you are like myself being a die hard griller / smoker that prefers to use charcoal rather than gas or pellets. I bought my second one for the same grill I purchased my first one for (Kamado type grill) but I decided that I needed to purchase a drum type grill so I gave my original one away to a co-worker. After a couple of months I was kicking myself for my uneducated purchase. Anyway back to the Tip Top Temp temperature controller, as simple design this don’t be fooled by its ease of use and accuracy. The only thing that I have found to get you scrambling with this is a major drop in temperature or the occasional rainfall. You can counteract this like a did by making a tin can cap to fit over the top of the coil to deter the effects of these weather conditions. I just got through doing a 12 pound pork shoulder butt that I cooked @ 250 for around 17 1/2 hours, temperature stayed easily within +/- 10 degrees for the entire cook. For the ease of use and price for a solid temperature controller you absolutely can not go wrong with a TTT!!

I like the TipTop Temp so much that I’ve started giving them as gifts. If you are a true Smokeologist who uses real wood chunks and lump charcoal; if you secretly discredit or frown on those who swear by their pellet contraptions, the TipTop Temp is a must. If you are intrigued by fancy electric igniting, temperature controlling, dragon breath blowing devices but can’t bring yourself to drop hundreds just to see if they work, the TipTop Temp is for you. I’ve never actually read directions but this is how I use this amazing device. I start my smoker and get it up to temp without the TipTop temp attached. Once I’m at temp, close bottom vent fully, open top vent fully, attach TipTop Temp to top vent, rotate knob to all but close flap of TipTop Temp (slight cracked open), and then start cooking. Flap will open if temp drops to allow air flow and regain temp.

Didn’t like directions

The adjustment knob is not fixed to the shaft. Marking temp settings is futile until the knob does not spin on the shaft. The bi-metal coil is not protected from the wind. Slight breezes change the opening of the vent. I should have sent it back. I tried it 5 times and it just does not work good.
