Fabulous
The Munsters was a show that I'll never get tired of watching over and over. Herman, played by the brilliant and now sadly departed Fred Gwynn was a wonderful character. His look was that of the classic Frankenstein monster. But Herman himself though he was identical to the monster could not have been more different. Herman was scared of his own shadow. He got frightened if he went downstairs for a glass of water during the night and heard a floor board creek . You could relate to Herman so much as a person in his every day life or non person as Herman was, oh you get what I'm saying don't you. I just loved how he would sit on the dusty sofa and read his paper at the end of his days work. I mean, come on, Frankenstein's monster sitting on the sofa reading the paper like any other run of the mill normal husband, father. That's what was one of the many things that made the character Herman great and though scary to look at you looked past the monster face and saw the lovable big cudderly teddy bear inside. And one episode that comes to mind is follow that Munster. Herman wants to be a private detective and gets the whole kit of disguises, false beard and glasses and so on. Of course things don't run smoothly for poor Herman as a private detective and, well, I won't give anything away if you havnt yet seen the episode. One of the many Trates that made Herman so wonderfull was his laugh and the silly way he grinned and got excited about things and jumped up and down, just about bringing the house crashing to its foundations forgetting about his own strength. Take away the Frankenstein face and you have a character who is just like any other guy. Grandpa was euqually as wonderfull played by the also great Al Lewis. Grandpa was I think supposed to be the iconic Dracula and there was many a running joke about his character, blood jokes, bat jokes. Gwynn and Lewis had been together on another show before the Munsters, I think it was a police comedy if I recall right. So the two already knew each other and how the other performed. In a lot of the Munsters episodes Herman and Grandpa would normally be together in some sort of a scrape trying to sort things out and put things right once more normally brought on by one of the two acting the oath and messing things up. The other characters in the show was Lilly, Hermans wife and Grandpas daughter. I think Lilly was herself a vampire. Her character was that of the normal surbuban housewife and she would have breakfast ready each morning for grandpa and Herman, pancakes if I remember. Herman and Lilly had a son, Eddie played by Butch Patrick. Eddie was a werewolf though I don't think we ever saw him change into one but I do think we heard him howl once or twice. Lastly there was Marilynn and her character could not have been more different. She herself was not a monster but a completely normal human, well as normal as us humans can be right lol. Her character was simply just beautiful, she was gorgeous. I'm not sure or can't remember how she fitted into the family but she wasn't frighented one bit about being around the rest of them at all. It was as if Herman who she called uncle Herman, it was like he was just normal looking and didn't look like he did, that's how she acted. Also the same for the others. The Munsters only ran for I think two seasons but there was about 38 episodes in each season so plenty of fun to enjoy for the viewer. The shows not dated at all in my veiw and can still be enjoyed in 2017as it was enjoyed back in the 60s. First clas show.

Munsters Vs Addams... and the winner is?
As a kid I always loved The Munsters and the Addams Family, but the Munsters were my absolute favourite. As an adult would I agree with this? I have all five sets of DVDs and so here's my view:Entertainment Value - Munsters 10/10, Addams 9/10I'm not sure how much of this is bias, I just love the Munsters and chuckle along to every episode. It's slapstick and has a more endearing bias towards younger viewers. All the characters are fantastic. The Addams is slightly more sophisticated, maybe more aimed at the adult mentality and undertones of what will happen off-screen... Morticia is the best character for my money, I so wanted to grow up and have a wife just like her... hah!Quality of transfer to DVD - Munsters 10/10, Addams 8/10The quality is as good as you could expect from an old TV show. The Munsters picture quality is pretty clear and constant throughout with good clarity of sound. The Addams Family earlier shows are a little disappointing and look significantly older than later episodes.Value for Money - Munsters 10/10, Addams, 5/10Both programmes lived through two seasons however the Addams are cynically spread over THREE sets of DVDs so you are fleeced for extra cash. Here you get the whole of season 1 (not two thirds) and it's great value for money (especially if you slam this into your wish list and monitor the price as they do vary from day to day).On balance, the Munsters still wins it for me, but mainly for different reasons to when I was a kid - who knew we might have DVDs back then?

I'd forgotten how much fun This old Classic was!
It was wonderful being transposed back to this 1960s classic comedy. Good Quality watch. Great fun. The grandkids loved it too!

Great series, but where is season 2?
I've been watching this, takes me back to my early teens, but where is the rest, no season 2? Apparently only in the US ☹️

Still entertaining
This show is long before my time but I enjoyed the reruns on TV when I was little, felt nostalgic when I saw it on sale here and bought it, it's still just as entertaining now as it was when I was little, it's funny and something the family can watch, even my teen daughter enjoyed it.

d'authentiques monstres!

WELCOME TO 1313 MOCKINGBIRD LANE
So many of the previous reviews are done in anticipation of the DVD release, but not much has been said about the set itself. What you get is the Munsters in their original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.33:1 with the unaired pilot in color and the first 38 episodes of the show in glorious Black & White. Other than a few minor problems, the set is well done and Universal Studios should be commended for giving us the Munsters Season One on DVD.The sound in Dolby Digital 2.0 is very clean and well done, considering that this show is over 40 years old. The picture quality is superior to any of Munsters episodes I have seen in any previous format before. However there are some very minor specks and debris in some episodes, but really nothing to complain about. There are also a number of scenes in various episodes where the picture contrast is on the dark side and it's hard to make out some of the images or fine detail in the scene. Overall these minor problems do not take away from the great quality of this set.The packaging is well done with nice artwork throughout. One major drawback is that the 38 episodes are on dual sided discs. While I'm not a big fan of this format, it does keep the cost down. In my opinion after seeing the original pilot in color, I think the Studio made the right choice to film the show in Black & White. Overall the Munsters Season One is hilarious and quirky fun for the whole family and the characters are just as loveable today. There's really nothing to think about if you're a fan of the show, grab your set today!!This three-disc Dual sided DVD set has all 38 first-season episodes with remastered transfers, and includes the 15-minute pilot with different actors as Lily and Eddie, unfortunately there are no extras or commentaries.Very few shows that are over 40 years old can attract new legions of fans, but the "Munsters" continue to do it. The fact that the Munsters aired only 70 episodes during their brief 2 year run proves this set is worth the money, just for my wonderful memories of this great show and its loveable characters.Episodes include:The Munsters Unaired Pilot, Munster Masquerade, My Fair Munster ,A Walk on the Mild Side , Rock-a-Bye Munster , Pike's Pique , Lo-Cal Munster, Tin Can Man, Herman the Great, Knock Wood, Here Comes Charlie, Autumn Croakus, The Midnight Ride of Herman Munster, The Sleeping Cutie ,The Munsters' Family Portrait, Grandpa Leaves Home, Herman's Rival ,Grandpa's Call of the Wild ,All-Star Munster,If a Martian Answers; Hang Up , Eddie's Nickname , Bats of a Feather, Don't Bank on Herman , Dance With Me Herman , Follow That Munster, Love Locked Out, Come Back, Little Googie, Far Out Munsters , Munsters on the Move , Movie Star Munster, Herman the Rookie , Country Club Munsters, Love Comes to Mockingbird Heights , Mummy Munster , Lily Munster, Girl Model, Munster the Magnificent , Herman's Happy Valley , Hot Rod Herman ,Herman's Raise,Yes Galen, There Is a Herman

Finally The Munsters on DVD!
I am overjoyed at the prospect of owning The Munsters - The Complete First Season. This series has been and probably always will be one of my all-time favorite television shows. I can still remember growing up watching the afternoon reruns on WPIX from New York. The Munsters was created by Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher, the same team that brought Leave It To Beaver to television. Beaver was the quintessential American family sitcom of the late 50's - early 60's. Connelly and Mosher helped to establish all those nostalgic family sitcom cliches we've all come to love (or hate) in Leave It To Beaver then they went on to totally parody them in The Munsters. The first season opening credit sequence of The Munsters is a great example of the way they parodied the typical family sitcoms of the time. You see Lily Munster, housewife and mother, sending her brood off for the day in the same manner June Cleaver and Donna Reed did. Lily hands each of her loved ones their packed lunches or school books as she pinches their cheeks or gives them a little motherly kiss.Although The Munsters was considered much less sophisticated than its 60s creepy TV rival, The Addams Family, it is overall a much more entertaining series to me. Although the subversive quality of The Addams Family continues to make it an entertaining series to watch as an adult, I have to admit I didn't enjoy it as a child. The Munsters with its broad comedy and more obvious monster characters was much more fun to watch as a kid. It's worth pointing out that even though Morticia and Gomez Addams had a fiery sexual relationship on screen, Lily and Herman Munster may have been one of the only 60s TV couples to have been seen sharing the same bed (rather than the customary twin beds). The Munsters - The Complete First Season contains all 38 first season episodes (yes 38 shows in one season!) as well as the original unaired pilot (in color I think). It doesn't appear that there are too many more extras in this set which is a bit disappointing. I would have loved to have seen episode commentaries by surviving cast members, documentaries, behind-the-scenes footage, etc. Hey, maybe we will get some of those extras on the Second Season set?
