Fascinating - Stockholm syndrome
well written and clear explanations of how the religious husband destroyed his wife's personality.I could recognize the what goes on behind closed doors and the abusive behaviours and resulting Ptsd she will continue to suffer for her life.No one can recognize abusers in a home unless they experienced it to recognize it.I watched the movie first and both are excellent. The movie caused me to purchase and read the book.Well done to the author and movie directors. What gets me is that his father must have these tendencies because if he had learnt good behaviour to women, then his father would have become aware of his son's abuse. Fancy trying to suffocate your own babies. He was a very disturbed man. Great book to read that gives words to abuse.

Well written but short on insider information
I am a fan of Diane Fanning's other book Written in Blood. This book was just as well written, but it seems clear she did not have much insider information from the family....which would be required to get to the bottom of this case. The facts of this case are not in dispute (Mary shooting her husband), just the motivation and intentionality. If you read the headlines and want to know more, this would be a good book for you; however, if you watched the case on CourtTV, you're not likely to have any jaw-popping surprises here. The case is laid out including Mary's defense and the author's questions as to whether she really was abused. But there are no answers.

I can't decide how I felt about this book!
The writing was somewhat poor, but I still could not put the book down. Parts were written really well, but some sentences in the beginning were a bit off-kilterMy biggest problem was her analysis of the church of Christ. It is not a cult or a sect and does not encourage misogyny.

Excellent book.
Excellent book...large readable typeface...very much a documentary style without a lot of literary license. I'm not wanting a literary masterpiece. I want to learn about the case...people involved. I intend to investigate her other books.

I followed the case when it was going on and so this book was a good way to review the actual thing
Living this close to the town where this all took place made me curious to read this book. I followed the case when it was going on and so this book was a good way to review the actual thing. I really enjoyed the way the book was worded so that I could understand the legal terminology better. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning both sided of the story.

Sad but needed to be told.
Since I am a member of the Church of Christ I knew Matthew's father and grandfather and had heard them preach. I do not think Mary Winkler should have been set free without some jail time. Anyway I enjoyed reading the book.

No one knows what goes on behind closed doors allright!
Dianne Fanning is supreme telling this shocking story. Background information is present but doesn't slowthe telling of the story. You really never know what goes on between a husband and wifeunless you are in the bed beside them.
