This book is a very realistic deep-dive into the lives of army personnel and what goes on at war. It depicts the good, bad and ugly in detail. While some parts were difficult to read - it was very educative and eye opening.

The novel is set against the Vietnam War where Frankie McGrath, a privileged Californian, becomes a nurse after her brother's death in combat. Kristin Hannah adeptly charts Frankie's evolution into a seasoned trauma nurse amidst war's chaos. My first Kristin Hannah, and definitely not the last. This was my highlight read of March for me. I have been meaning to read books by her for ages because of their heavy topics and because they are historical fiction. But I am so glad I picked up her latest release, 'The Women'. It made me fall in love with this genre all over again, which I had lacked while reading a few others in the past.And trust me, you do not want to come back to this book after consecutive hectic work days due to its heavy topics, dealing with grief, death, etc., but the writing is so good that I am suffering along with the characters. It is so heavy yet so devastatingly beautiful because of her storytelling and evocative writing style!Frances “Frankie” McGrath, a 22-year-old nursing student, follows her brother's path to join the Army Nurse Corps and has hope of a different future for herself. Frankie, you have my heart and blessings. At times, I was so engrossed in the plot, and due to the writing style, I felt like I was myself in Vietnam with Frankie and her other nursing veterans.But the beauty of this book is that, just as you think that Frankie returning to America would end all her suffering and ours, the author throws another ball at us with how much things have changed all these years between the two countries and the people living there. Her parents and society do not look at things with the same eye as her, and that's when her real post-war horror starts.The book also has some questionable and messy love story angle to it, but war makes us all think things we wouldn't in normal settings. I think everyone should read this book, and I am definitely going to pick up her other books soon. Also, check out the trigger warming before picking up this book.

A nice and easy read with just a few misses. We all have heard stories of men at war but rarely do we get to know about the people (women) behind.

471 pages, two days... tehnically three, since it's now 12:39am on the third day.I didn't plan to read this book in so few days, but I couldn't put it down. It's an excellent, albeit difficult, read. The horrors of the Vietnam War, both in-country and back home upon the soldiers' return are disturbing. Kristin Hannah doesn't gloss over the violence, the injuries, the death, the lies, the nightmares - the ugly of the Vietnam War and the US's part in it are right there in black and white, but so is the comradery, the support, and an unexpected beauty.To say I enjoyed this book would seem odd. Enjoy isn't the right word. I am glad I read it. It is well-written; the characters come alive and the story is engaging, but also haunting, heart-breaking, and mind-numbing. It was definitely a worthwhile read, one that will likely stay with me far into the future.

From the first sentence, this novel drew me in and didn’t let go. Gripping, sad, heart pounding, funny, love-filled, emotional, infuriating, inspirational, and at the end, so much hope - a historic novel that tackles a subject greatly neglected to this day, and does it in a most engaging, believable and truthful way. The writing, the story, the ups and downs make for an excellent read and I highly recommend this book. Thank you, Kristin!!

Omg, Kristin Hannah is the best historical fiction author! This book had me hooked since the beginning and had me sobbing! It was heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. I loved this book

I admit I'm not an emotional reader. It takes a lot me make me shed tears while reading, but the ending of this book was surprisinly emotional for me. I love reading historical novels, but I knew little about the Vietnam War and its outcomes to the soldiers and nurses who ventured in there in service. A really good book that like many other that I've been reading, show the forgotten role of women in wars that marked a whole generation.
