Spoiled
I have purchased this before a few times. Once, I had some of the cans dented enough that the seal was broken. I cold actually squeeze the can and feel a bit of air come out around the top. This time, I couldn't see any broken seals of bad dents; however, with one can, the meat inside was definitely spoiled. The center of the block was slightly pink, but all the edges and sides were a nasty grayish color.Considering how many billions of products are shipped every day from various places, a leaky can is inevitable from time to time. The reason for the rating not being a 5 is the difficulty getting the lid open. Sometimes, I can use a kitchen towel to protect my fingers as I pull the tab back, but there have been times when I couldn't budge it past a certain point, and I've had to use a pair of pliers to pull off the rest of the lid. It's nice to have a secure lid, but, first of all, we've seen that it doesn't guaranteed a can leak and spoiled product, and, second, a product that can't be opened, sometimes at all, is not going to get the manufacturer return customers. As far as the salt...for me, it doesn't taste salty as Spam. I prefer the taste of Armour Star Pork Luncheon Meat, anyway. But, for health reasons, I cut the block into cubes, rinse it thoroughly, and then soak it for an hour in the fridge in a large bowl of water. Drain and rinse it again, and a good percentage of the sodium is gone.Note that the various ways to make these meats TASTE less salty, such as cream sauces, lemon juice, wine vinegar, etc., affect ONLY the taste. None of them actually reduces the AMOUNT of salt. That is done with the rinsing to get the salt on the surface washed off and then soaking in a lot of water because salt leaches out into water. You can make things taste less salty with ingredients that mask or neutralize the salty taste, but you'll still be getting the high levels of sodium. But it's a quick meal, great during power outages. I generally cube, rinse, and soak a couple cans of it and then freeze it because, when the power goes out, my well pump does not work, so I make sure I have some already prepped. I actually do the rinsing, draining, and rinsing again with all canned vegetables I use, including the ones labeled as "low sodium."The other thing I like is that there is no added starch in it. I have a number of food intolerances, including the inability to process fructose and a corn intolerance. Many canned meats contain cornstarch or other corn derivative. Spam has potato starch, which I can eat in very small quantities, but I feel better about Armour Star Luncheon Meat having no starch. Since corn is not one of the allergens that has to be listed by FDA rules, corn is frequently in many prepared and processed foods. This applies ONLY to Armour Star Pork Luncheon Meat. Armour Star Treet is no-no for me; it contains corn syrup. The photo's color isn't accurate, but it does show that it was not the solid pink that the entire block of meat should be. Plus, in the lower corner, there's visible black mold growing.Even though I hadn't found a leak in the can before opening, clearly the seal was not airtight. I haven't opened the remaining 6 cans yet, so I'm hoping they will be okay.

What a Starving Boy Needs
These taste every bit as good as the "other" name brand product.. only cheaper. High calorie end of the world sustenance. Slice into slivers, fry and add some BBQ sauce. Instant pulled pork sandwich. Add a little cole slaw.. mmmmm..

Good for the price, long term storage, of course salty
The ingredients are simple. The flavor is fine, I like it better then a couple of other brands I have tried. I bought a slicer designed for these type of products to make cutting easy. It is definitely a salty product, you have to be ok with knowing it’s not healthy but it will fill you up. However to know I can eat this out of the can as well as heating it up makes it a worthwhile addition to have available. The price is better than a lot of others.

Higher quality product at 1/2the price.
Great product arrived fast and was exactly what was advertised.Reading the reviews before buying I noticed a lot of comments about the cans being hard to open. They're not. They are fairly easy opening cans actually.Easy opening as far as square cans go that is. Which isn't saying muchAll cans of this shape have the same issue if you try to open them like the round cans rings tend to break off and can openers don't work on them very well or at all.If you pull up a little longer and peel the lid back a little slower they open just fine.just takes a little practise. I feed this product to rescue dogs that need to regain weight and eat a fair bit myself so no prob for me. I doubt most people deal with square cans very often so....Its not the Armour company's fault and the product they make higher is quality than any of the others and its 1/2 the price. And its in the same can made by the same can company

I found the perfect Luncheon Meat
I have tried numerous different brands in the past, and in my last attempt, I finally came across Amour Star. It is tender, with just the right amount of savoriness, and very easy to open. In a matter of minutes, I have a perfect meal ready, and it's great as a sandwich meat as well. I would recommend this to anyone.
