I have a craftsman lawnmower 550 series model # 917371750 and I need a intake manifold replacement part so how do I know which one is the right one ?

In answer to your question:You can go about this 2 ways: 1-Get the model & type  & code numbers off of your engine this is the most important step, without this info you are dead in the water, located on the engine schroud, this is the metal cover that goes over the engine flywheel,& you should see the spark wire near the shroud, there will either be a sticker with the info on it, or it will be stamped into the shroud. Go to SEARS PARTS on your pc, just type in the equipment model # of your lawnmower #917371750, go to lawn mower, or lawn & garden heading on the page, they should ask you for the equipment mod# which is #917371750, type this# in the search window when prompted.There you can find anything from a-z on your machine, anything from tires wheels ,sheet metal housings, engine parts etc,etc, etc,2 ND -Way you can do this is go to a site called the PARTS TREE,OR JACKS SMALL ENGINES,with the engine specs they will take care of you there,there you can look up anything on your engine several full parts diagrams, these diagrams cover everything about you engine, just specify what make of engine is on your machine, be it a tecumseh, briggs& stratton, kohler,onan, etc. etc.etc.The bulk of crafstman riding mowers have either a tecumseh or a briggs engine.& don,t forget to include the mod, type, & code #s. On tecumseh engines they list as mod# type#& spec#instead of code # like briggs engines.A lot of times crafstman will delete the tecumseh mod numbers so you will have to go through them for parts, in this case just use your equipment model# this should peg it.If you have a briggs engine it should have the attached engine specs that i mentioned.I have been in this line of work for about 32 yrs, small engine repair& at times i can be a real headache.I hope this is as clear as mud to you,just kidding, if you follow my instructions, this should solve your problem GOOD LUCK.I hope i was helpful.1-last note you do not necessarly have to buy from sears , or any other parts suppliers i suggested, just get the part # you need from the diagrams on any of these sites,& you can shop on e-bay, on amazon .com.I usually go where i can get the cheapest deal, sometimes you can get free s&h, but not always.HOPE THIS SOLVES YOUR PROBLEM?

I am not familiar with your model. When I bought this manifold for my lawnmower there are several manifolds that looked very similar. I studied the shape of my manifold to what was available. All the flat spots, curves, etc. Just look at the photos and closely compare yours to whatever manifolds are available.
