I had a deam
This DVD was sent to me as a surprise gift: when I saw what was inside the gift I was not really interested but eventually I decided to watch itWhat a surprise! This film is like a dream where all impossible things are possible: where an abandoned baby is not destroyed by it but grows into a bright genial balanced boy, where that boy learns the guitar in a few hours and organ on the spot, where he ends up at Julliard in the composition class, where he writes his own music and conducts the premiere of it ....and I will not tell the conclusion as it would spoil it.I loved it all: script, acting and of course the marvellous sound track...So, I bought and got it sent to several friends and family as a surprise giftSo far every single person has been amazed and all enchanted by itIt fells so good to believe, for a short time, that a child can hold his destiny in his own hands; It feels so good when there is no two music categories; the " serious one" and the"trash"Oliver danced and sung his sad life, August Rush listen and creates music in the quest of his parents.I was also amazed by so many negative revues by professional critics; don't' they dream sometimes? Eventually a recommendation by one friend is the most enticing incentive.I had a dream and when I woke up it felt good.Don't rent it, own it!

Watch - listen - and enjoy!!
"August Rush" is beautiful - the kind of beautiful that will make you laugh and cry, even though it has a foreseeable ending and it has a distinct Oliver Twist-y flair."August Rush" is about the 11-year-old Evan, who has lived his entire life as an orphan, hearing music emanating from the world around him. The opening scene, where Evan is standing in a field of wheat, moving in the wind, perfectly encapsules this. Even is sure that his parents are out there and runs away from the orphanage/home. He arrives in New York and is guided by music.Music plays a crucial role in "August Rush". There is the classical cello for the mother, lead rock guitar and song for the father, the blues harmonica for the Fagan-character Wizard, and the composit sound of the city/environment for the searching Evan. Anybody in the movie has their own sound/music.For those of you who fear a too-sweet movie, let me say that there is no overly romantic and/or cheasy finale. THAT scene has thankfully been omitted.Oh yes, I have to mention the cast. This is one of those movie with a great ensemble casts. Robin Williams' eccentric and slightly crazy Wizard does seem a little on the over-played side, but the rest of the cast fill their roles to perfection.Watch - listen - and enjoy!!Louise.

If music be the food of love, play on.
I first saw this film on television and knew it was going to be my kind of film. My background and upbringing has been steeped in music; for me this film was magical, if only for the music itself. Yes it was tear jerking and yes the ending was too fast, even though I knew, from the music, that it must end happily. The film is a must for those who feel that 'music is the food of love'. There are films that should be viewed for the magic which captures the imagination, as in fairy tales, and should not be for unfeeling critics, who perhaps do not understand just what music is all about and how it relates to living and the innermost feelings that it invokes in those who understand it. I thought the acting was just about right, although possibly would not win any Oscars. But for pure feeling, beautiflul music and scenery, it was just up my street. For those who are of a sentimental nature, let them buy this DVD, for what it is, sheer poetry.

Anyone who has a heart (and imagination) will love this film......!
Reading through previous reviews - there's quite a polarisation in those who do and those who do not appreciate this film. Rather like folks who have natural pitch and those who are tone deaf......Perhaps one of the problems (why it loses a star for me) is the way it is titled and packaged. It gives the impression of a sugary sweet, talented, child-brat on a Summer holiday...."Found" would have had more gravitas - perhaps?Freddie Highmore was nominated for a BAFTA in 2007 for this excellent portrayal of a gifted determined child, following his winning BAFTAs for "Finding Neverland" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" - both alongside Johnny Depp. Those reviewers who bang on about it being totally predictable with impossible coincidences are missing the point - it is about the communication which music gives us all - beyond distance, language, and ethnicity. The synchronicity between classical pieces (Elgar's Cello Concerto with Jonathan Rhys Meyers' own modern rock) is just awe inspiring - and unusual.Robin Williams does make for rather a strange "Fagin" character, but he still manages to portray the boy (he was) who hasn't healed from past hurts, hence him trying to live vicariously through his streetwise band of busking "recruits". Keri Russell is so beautiful.....convincing enough to make me reach for the tissues.Especially stunning, and not mentioned by many reviewers - are the sights and sounds of everyday life - all spliced together, and orchestrated by the film's producers. It has changed the way I walk through large Cities, or even underneath trees, or by the sea...Yes - it DOES have a happy ending - but WHY NOT???? There's too much naked, raw realism in this World as it is.
