Batman in the Victorian Era
Just some thoughts on this very unique R-rated Batman animated film...Batman: Gotham By Gaslight (2018) is a fresh new approach (for one film, at least) taken to Batman and works incredibly well. The setting is Gotham City in the late nineteenth century and Batman's foe is the infamous serial killer Jack The Ripper. Even though Jack The Ripper terrorized London, England in 1888, his placement into the Gotham City setting for this film works very well. This film has quite a bit of blood and gore and is quite shocking in some parts. There are even a couple of four letter words spoken. It's a film that is not for children, that's for sure, thus the R rating. One of the strongest aspects of this film is the dark, brooding atmosphere of Gotham City at night and in foggy conditions. This film captures the late nineteenth century extremely well, everything from the clothing the characters wear, to the buildings, to the technology. The Jack The Ripper character is dark and menacing. The fight scenes are excellent, the animation is excellent, the voicework is great and the music is well done.If you're looking for a break away from the typical Batman formula and want to watch something different with a unique twist that's very effective, then I highly recommend this animated film.

Wow!
This is a gritty but very well done take on a Batman classic. If you've ever wanted to see Batman go toe to toe with Jack the Ripper or what a Victorian Batman would have looked this is your show. The most amazing thing is how they kept Batman true to character in a different timeline.

Steampunk Batman
Based very loosely upon the Elseworlds comic book special Batman: Gotham by Gaslight , the movie Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is an improvement IMHO, in part because, unlike in the comic, in the movie several different DC characters show up, some expected, some surprises, and (this is very important) while said DC characters have enough of their usual characteristics (starting with their names) in order for us to recognize them, they don’t necessarily behave the same or have the same fates. An important early indication of this comes when we see the Poison Ivy/Pamela Isley character portrayed as an unhappy strip dancer/prostitute with a plant based costume. While you are still trying to figure out what the heck she is doing in the movie, she is brutally murdered as Jack the Ripper’s first movie victim, though not his first victim…. Watch out for more surprises.Defects? A few, mostly under the category of either too much of a coincidence that brings the hero and villain on stage at the same time or not enough information given to justify said coincidence. Two examples I could name but not detail in order not to spoil things involve Sister Leslie and Dr. Hugo Strange. It is also a little unclear how all of the loose ends would be tied up neatly enough by the end to allow Batman/Bruce Wayne to go on.Note: The Blu-ray (but not the DVD) contains 2 bonus cartoon episodes that really fit in because both involve Batman cartoons in which somewhat analogous adventures take place. The first, Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode 15 “Trials of the Demon!” (2009) involves Batman being transported back to the time of Sherlock Holmes during the panic surrounding a Jack the Ripper style mystery and after his modern costume is destroyed, having it replaced with something more contemporary by Jason Blood; the second, Batman: The Animated Series episode 78 ”Showdown” (1995) is a story that takes place at the time of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad that Batman merely hears about involving Jonah Hex and a Jules Verne/Steampunk flying machine. Brilliantly selected.

Very good - Elseworld Gaslight era Batman tale.
This is a animated version of the batman cartoon character. It is set in the Elseworld realm where there is a Edwardian era Batman set in a Gotham City beset by a Jack the Ripper character. In these tales, the classic Batman characters are reimagined in another place and time - the one constant being the character of Batman. There have been medieval batman, pirate batman, 1920s batman, etc.The animation is pretty good and the voice work is excellent. The historical bits are also pretty good. Little bits like people being drugged with laudanum, a world's expo, and a serial killer haunting it much as there was a serial killer haunting the Chicago world fair of 1893.Without spoiling the movie, potential buyers should know the Elseworld stories are usually more adult themed and this one follows that pattern. With a serial killer like Jack the Ripper on the loose the story is a bit gory and graphic. But it is never silly or gratuitous. The plot is actually well thought out. The final reveal of the killer also is consistent and makes sense both in the story and historically. But be forewarned, this is not a kid friendly movie like the Batman The Animated Series - this is definitely a darker Batman. The movie is well done and moves along and is quite good. It also improves on the source material - fusing two of the comic Elseworld tales of a gaslight era Batman into a more coherent story. Highly recommended for fans just not for kids - definitely a PG-13/R if it were a live action movie. Too bad the recent live action movies weren't as well scripted.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight
It was a great movie that take Gotham City in the Victorian-area in London's East End, Whitechapel. They also mentioned the real live serial killer who ravaged 19th century London, England. This psychopath butchered 5 women in cold blood using only a blade. The crime shook the city to it's core. The London police were never able to catch him, and his case has gone unsolved to this day.
