Antonio Banderas teams with Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie for this sultry, sexy film in which "sex is used the old-fashioned way: as a deadly weapon" (Detroit Free Press). An erotic thriller of desire, disillusion and obsession. Wealthy Cuban coffee merchant Luis Vargas only knows his bride-to-be through letters of love. When he finally meets Julia on their wedding day, he is left breathless by her beauty and sexuality. When he finds his business in ruins, his life in shambles and his new wife on the run, Luis begins a relentless pursuit for the woman who not only stole his money, but also his heart.

Too much nudity
This movie was enjoyable; however I could have done without seeing Angelina and Antonio in bed naked. I don't understand why actors of this caliber ( or any caliber for that matter) feel it necessary to do these nude scenes. It could have been done more discretely. I didn't really need or want to see Angelina's breasts or Antonio's bare bottom. It was a bit shocking. After all, I was not watching porn.

Bad acting; bad writing
Everything in this movie — the characters, the dialogue, the plot — was literally unbelievable. By that, I mean, it failed in the most basic way to allow the viewer to suspend disbelief and enter the world of the movie. The whole time I was watching Angelina Jolie all I could see was Angelina Jolie mouthing ridiculous lines in a phony accent. Much the same with Antonio Banderas except that his accent, I suppose, is real. Watching them have sex was like watching soft core porn. I can’t believe this movie got so many good reviews on Amazon, it didn’t anywhere else.

Belmondo .. VS.. Banderas Deneuve .. VS Jolie'
Well I had heard of the movie title many years back.. So I decided to watch it for Free.. It seemed at first to me like a period piece movie..? I like Antonio and Angelina as actor's and have enjoyed their works before ... then around the middle of the film . It suddenly dawned on me... Where do I know this from.. Gotcha ..!! !! About a month ago.. I watched a French film with "C. Deneuve and J. Belmondo called "Mississippi Mermaid" ..? Another re-boot of a older foreign film. Hollywood did it again... lazy writer's and the only difference is the date of when the story begin's.. and the later part of the story. What sold this movie to audiences in 2001 was the "Explicit scenes" ..and the fact that A.J has a history with her male counter part's such as B.P in movies. I won't trash her ..but as a film lover ,especially one of movies made between 1935-1979... I hope that producer's would at least try to come up with material that isn't borrowed from film's where the original cast mate's are either "Deceased or near retirement"..?? I think they did a decent job.... but C.Deneuve is way better at portraying a grifter ..than A.J did in this movie. There is a lot of cat and mouse in this movie...

Ludicrous
I cannot stand Angelina Jolie as an actress; she plays the same role in every movie, with the same annoying mannerisms. (The wigs they stuck on her head for this role were Medusa-like.) I watched this only because Antonio Banderas was in it. Unfortunately, the movie started out bad and got worse, with Jolie's character announcing that she sent Banderas the wrong picture because she thought he wouldn't like it that she was pretty. That line was LOL funny. Also, it strained credulity that a great catch like Banderas character had to send away for a mail-order bride. I've never heard of Thomas Jane, who played Jolie's partner-in-crime, but he was over-the-top hammy. The movie continued with one ridiculously improbable scene after another and ended on the same note. If you like campy movies, with gratuitous sex that is strangely boring, then this movie might be for you. The only scene I truly enjoyed was Banderas in his bed, waking up alone in the morning wearing only semi-sheer, white pajama bottoms and an open robe!)

Antonio...(:
Let me just say...Antonio Banderas. Gosh did I forget how handsome he was. I was flipping through movies on Amazon and saw this and was immediately intrigued with the story line. If you are looking for a movie about passion this is it. It's insane. I also love Angelina Jolie but didnt quite like her for this story line, it still worked though. She is gorgeous of course, but I think sometimes it can be a little distracting. I don't know how to explain it, I know that movies sell when they have really sexy women in it but Im not sure why her acting bothers me. Its still a good story, its kind of not what you'd expect. And the whole time your like "nooo" but also "yess" and it made me go on an Antonio Banderas marathon after I watched it. Its worth it alone to see him be romantically dreamy for two hours.

Sherlock and Agatha...HELP!!!
A very hot and sexy movie with two fabulous stars!! But after watching it, I find myself needing to watch it a second time right away. It confused me, and I consider myself a cross between Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie when it comes to solving mini to maxi mysteries. Parts of it lose the sexiness when the mind tries to both go back to the past and jump a bit forward. Perhaps I would give it 5 stars if I "got it" the first time through.

Must have for a Banderas collection
This is a story about love, as Bonny Castle would say. It's a story about a man and a woman from two different worlds, who come together in marriage, and find out what it really means to be one. Some would say this is a movie about a con artist who screwed her husband over. A con artist who was unworthy of the man she married. They might say she made her husband look like a fool. But truly, it is the con artist who is the fool, who managed to con herself into believing she could be nothing but the lowest of the low, even when the best was given to her.In both characters we see what could be seen as unconventional, cynical standards. Luis expected a homely, simple wife, not even expecting love. Bonny expected money, not expecting a husband that would accept her for all her flaws and help her fight her demons. The moral of this story could perhaps be that if a couple is willing, they can overcome obstacles in their lives and grow by marriage. But of course, there are always con artists in the real world who are just evil and cannot be helped.I would go as far as to say that Billy is the movie's evil. Billy offers everyone help, at a price. He does not advise on what is best for everyone, but what is essentially best for him. He uses Luis in every way but makes himself out to be a friendly ally. He does all he can to keep Bonny within her own limitations, which really just become the limitations set by Billy. The scratches almost like a marking on her very soul, as if to say her soul is his.Rounding up, I'll give this a 5 star review. I almost gave it 4 stars because the casing did not have any of those inserts that I like to read and look at. Bought this for around $9, which is excellent for a blue-ray price. I wanted this on Instant Video but Amazon does not appear to have it.

a good romantic movie
a toxic passion between a man and a woman in Havana. Based on the french movie "la sirène du Mississipi" with Catherine Deneuve and Jean-Paul Belmondo. The story is moving, excellent actors, they form a beautiful couple. I would recommand this american version of the famous french movie.

Excellent in All Respects
Very interesting story line and in parts the film is tastefully very erotic; although I am an Angelina Jolie and Antonio Banderas fan the brilliant acting kept me entranced throughout and was very believable, fan or not; a film to watch again and again.
