This was pop!
This 15 track retrospective of the pop band known as Girls Aloud appeals to me more than most records released by corporate-indie alternative types. The association of reality shows, whether the original programme that fused the five girls together, or the amusing one where Cheryl became even less likeable with every frame, is something I don't really care about. There are five girls here, but none of them are writing the songs or producing them, and they probably aren't reliant on autocue. But I don't care, as over 75% of this album is fantastic (9 out of 15 tracks more than work for me), and showcases the talents of the Xenomania production team who have also been responsible for material by Sophie Ellis Bextor, Sugababes, Rachel Stevens, KYLIE, and Saint Etienne. This was/is pop.Their first single 'Sound of the Overground' was a fair enough debut, despite the fact it was a diluted take on drum'n'bass and owed loads to the seminal 'Overload' by the original version of Sugababes (what we call the "Pulp Fiction" guitar due to its similarlity to 'Miserlou'!). Follow-up 'No Good Advice' was even better, cranking up what we now call "the Pulp Fiction guitar" (sci-fi surf muzak) and managing to rip off 'My Sharona' by The Knack a few years before Franz Ferdinand did the same with 'Do You Want To?' Pop ahead of indie?, you'd better believe it! Nicola's "Frankly I don't even care" kiss-off is kind of punk rock, while I detect a dash of 'Talk Talk' by Talk Talk in the song. Which can...only be a great thing!!!Of course, it's not all great - cover versions like the massacre of 'I Think We're Alone Now', 'Jump', 'I'll Stand By You', and 'See the Day' I can live without (the credits to Dee C Lee's 'See the Day' on the sleeve are to Xenomania, did they co-write this with Paul Weller in 1985?). 'Life Got Cold' is an amusing rip off of 'Wonderwall', I'm sure Noel Gallagher didn't sue since he'd pretty much done the same several times before ;'Whole Lotta History', meanwhile, is a dreary sub r'n'b ditty with a lame use of "Lotta" (nice video in Paris though...). That's the stuff I programme out and excuse as Girls Aloud are, after all, an example of free-market capitalism. But the rest? Surely must be the best LP ever, from the enjoyable scat of 'Love Machine' (which has parts that sound like 90s rave fades and Martin Gore's backing vocal from 'Shake the Disease'), to the potent industrial pop of 'Wake Me Up', which squares the difference between mid-80s Cabaret Voltaire and mid-90s Garbage, and then multiplies it by the 21st Century. More futuristic than Kid A then! 'Something Kinda Ooh' has more abysmal lyrics, though the songwriters were probably tapping into some Ouija demograph, or maybe mimicking the chatter of the five candidates who we know as Girls Aloud. Still...it rocks like anything and is a reminder that empty pop can feel somehow fulfilling. This is why I haven't completely retreated to the world of Throbbing Gristle and Ornette Coleman. 'Long Hot Summer', kind of a #7 flop, which is like getting to #32 ten years ago, and #23 twenty years ago, had more of that sub-Destiny's Child materialist lyrics, but is as catchy as heck, with post-modern allusions to Bananarama and about 16 references to prior pop songs that I can't be bothered to name. It does showcase Nadine's dominant lead vocals/rapping, a bit of a crutch for the outfit we know as the Girls Aloud. The two best songs, heck two of the best songs of the era we call the 21st Century, remain 'Biology' and 'The Show.' The former is one of the most ridiculous singles of all time, pop with multi-personality issues, every part catchy as catch-can or 'Catch' by The Cure. Which is catchy. Possibly the 16th best pop song of all time and the second best song by Girls Aloud. There is something better and that is a song called 'The Show' - a song that updates the digital climes of 'Computerworld'-era Kraftwerk (take away the vocals and you have something from 'The Mix' or 'Minimum-Maximum') and taps into the futurist pop evident in 'Try Again', 'Cry Me a River', 'More Than a Woman', 'Maneater', and 'Sexyback.' 21st century types aware of 'Get the Balance Right!', Cybotron, 'Let the Music Play', Gary Numan, 'Energy Flash', Scritti Politti vs Janet Jackson, 'Planet Rock', 'Confusion', 'Out of Touch'...and so on. The Girls known as Aloud do their thing, with lots of appalling lyrics that seem great stemming from their mouths: as real as Belle and Sebastian. "Should have known/Should have cared/Should have hung around in the kitchen hanging like a lady?" actually sounds quite emotional. God knows why it's so effective when it comes back in, maybe it's the overwhelming techno groove, utterly reletentless, and the banal restatement of the underwear-hook? "I love you" sounds banal, but works for many, ja? A pop single that is 3 minutes 37 seconds long called 'The Show' manages to dilute the three best songs from Computerworld into one - the relentless electronics of 'Numbers', the futurist techno of 'Homecomputer' and the machine soul of 'Computerlove' all coming together. This song could feature on a compilation between 'Shakedown' and 'World Destruction', or 'Confusion' and 'Nasty', or 'Strangelove' and 'Wood Beez.' 'The Show'...think about it.So...an album that contains 75% top material, with two of the greatest pop singles of all time? It has to be owned, despite the fact the Sugababes best of contains at least 83% top material. This was pop, a genre I can't shake, despite owning 'Metal Machine Music' and 'Trout Mask Replica' and quite liking them...

Best album ever!
This album has been listened to more than any other cd in my whole house - and there are a lot! Girls Aloud are the worlds best girl band! I really hope they stay togeather, making great songs for years to come! I also hope they win the TWO BRIT awards they have been nominated for! They deserve it for all their hard work! If any of you have read their autobiograph, 'dreams that glitter' you'll know what i mean! This album is proof of their musical genius! ENJOY! (vote Girls Aloud on the BRITs website!) =)

Girls Aloud at their best.
If you missed Girls Aloud, first time round, this is a great introduction into what their music was all about. This is a fantastic album, in my opinion, and I have already ordered two other G.A albums and may well buy all their c.d's, to try and get the set.

An Enjoyable Party Type Cd
I was intrigued and convinced to purchase one of the cd's of Girls Aloud after hearing, savoring, and enjoying "Call the Shots". I decided to get this collection, and I feel that this collection is a good selection of their tracks. Many of these songs are very high energy and hit the spot if you want to listen to something fun and exciting. Some of the good songs in this collection are "Love Machine", "Sound of the Underground", "Long Hot Summer", and "I Think Were Alone Now" (a good remake of the 80's version from Tiffany). The track that I enjoyed the most was "Something Kinda Ooooh". "Something Kinda Ooooh" is a very daring and catchy song about someone admitting that they really want the person that they are strongly attracted to. Overall, this is a great dance/pop compilation to own.

Fantastic
Girls Aloud Greatest Hits release 2006 in the UK. This is the best, they have all the 14 singles on the greatest hits album. Also including a track called Money which is part of the greatest hits not a single. All you pop lovers out there would love to have this who wouldn't? You got to Sound Of The Underground (First Single) up to I Think We're Alone Now (14th Single) their latest single of that year. Who can go wrong with Girls Aloud.
