Riding On a Beam of Light to K-PAX
Wow! Where do I start? How do I start? Now, we all know sequels can be trouble, right? So, I had the same preconceptions when approaching "On a Beam of Light," the sequel to the cult smash and now adapted for the silver screen: "K-PAX." I was wrong in having these preconceptions, the book was wonderful. It did go through some, at times confusing, twists and turns. This brings together much of the cast from the original book. In the wake of the departure of "prot" (rhymes with goat), Dr. Gene Brewer is left the catatonic "Robert" to treat. Five years to the day, after "prot" left, he has returned and brought Robert out of his state of catatonia. After Dr. Brewer published "K-PAX," the news of "prot's" return has traveled quickly. "prot" is a star of sorts. All the while the media and scientific blitz surrounds "prot," Dr. Brewer is trying to get at the reason Robert has been catatonic. That is all I will say about the plot as to avoid spoiling a wonderful story. This book is brilliant. I am now anxiously awaiting the delivery of the third and final book to my doorstep. The story and the character interaction in rather amazing, I was actually sad to see the book end. It was that good. I am sorry to say that I do not think this could be well adapted to a script as a sequel to the K-PAX movie. The one minorly important role, removed from the first K-PAX movie, plays a rather imperative part in the sequel. . .bummer. . .Oh well, it is a good read. Buy it, it is wonderfulepc

follow on volume
maintains the tension and pace of the first volume, highly implausible but fun to read and quite revealing about institutions

Stunning follow-up
It is a long time since I read a book in one sitting but this compelling tale pulls you through page by page. The essential question of whether Prot is 'real' or part of Robert's mental illness remains throughout. The story manages to encapsulate the one-on-one doctor/patient sessions as the central storyline, but seamlessly weaves into the story prot's relationship with (and effect upon)the other patients, the doctor's domestic life, and the administration of the hospital. As the story of Robert unfolds a rationale for prot becomes readily apparent, but the evidence keeps mounting that the simple answer of 'multiple personality' cannot explain.Read it and be moved. Bring on the movie and K PAX III.

Good...but another episode...
I thought K-PAX was a brilliant book. I don't like sequels or series generally. K-PAX II is good but never really generates the same intense involvement that K-PAX does. I felt that K-PAX had an good ending but K-PAX II finishes with the feeling that it is just a pause before K-PAX III. I will probably buy K-PAX III but I'd rather have read something new by Gene Brewer. I suppose one of the great things about K-PAX is the ambiguity of whether Prot is from another world or is a mentally disturbed human. We, the readers, want him to be from K-PAX but disappointingly it seems that the good doctor is finding more and more evidence that he is just another screwed up human. I am worried that by the time I finish K-PAX III I'll be wishing I'd never read beyond the last page of the first book as the sequels could destroy something beautiful.

A Good Book - With Some Fatal Flaws
I am a huge fan of 'K-Pax' and for the most part I also enjoyed 'K-Pax II'. The sequel follows on 5 years from the original at a time when Prot said he would return. Once again Dr Brewer is on hand to write in his journal the events that occur with Prot's time on Earth. Prot still has the power to understand mentally ill people and animals, but this time Robert, the man in whose body Prot inhabits, wants to be free. Will Robert or Prot become the dominate personality? The second in the K-Pax books has an interesting premise as it delves deeper into the psychosis of the man who thinks he is Prot. The book is excellent in highlighting the inner turmoil that a schizophrenic person goes through. Once again the writing style is fun as it is written as if Dr Brewer was creating an academic, yet entertaining book. However, for all the enjoyment I got from large parts of the book there were a couple of issues that made it impossible to recommend. Firstly, it is not a book in its own right but a companion piece to fit between the first and third books. Secondly, and far worse is one of the ridiculous side plots that sees a medical impossibility and no one seems fussed about it at all. Mr Brewer, if you are going to write intelligent and straight science fiction/psychological fiction, do not brush over miracles as if they were everyday. The event that occurs in the book left me thinking about it and stopped me enjoying the book - basically it ruined it.

An enjoyable and interesting read
A book that I have been wanting to read for a while now after reading the first installment a good few years ago.Not as compelling a read as the original but some great twists thrown into the plot to keep the readers mind ticking over.

続編なので登場人物など予備知識があるので、難しい精神分析の用語を除けば、大体は辞書なしで読み進められる。内容はともかく、英語の勉強にはなった。

Pretty Good.
This book is not as goos as the first, in fact, I don't see the point of a second ot third book. Could have made it one big book.

K-PAX
I've read most of the K-Pax series and like them. However, they grow a little weaker with each book.
