They work well if you actually know what you are doing!!!
After reading a few of the negative reviews, it became painfully obvious that the negative reviews are from people who do NOT know how to build a fire and somehow think they can just light these with a match or lighter and that will create the desired fire. For all of those types out there thinking it would be an equivalent to say, a duraflame or some other toxic garbage, it isn't. This is EXCELLENT kindling and works very well if you actually know how to build a fire. If you don't, consult YouTube or something so you can learn how to build a fire and the mechanics of it.These suckers when used properly with some fatwood or something else that can take a flame easily work as the secondary kindling that the fatwood or paper or whatever ignites your fire will then catch and burn very hot. As other reviews noted, they do pop a lot so make sure to get your screen closed after lighting your fire. Cedar is one of the best sources for kindling because it burns very hot and fast. Just make sure you have something a little larger on top (so this kindling will do it's job and ignite the larger pieces) so the cedar kindling isn't wasted as it will burn quickly once lit PROPERLY by someone who knows what they are doing. Fire isn't magic, it's science, so learn how to build one properly first before you start giving negative reviews for a really good product. It's not the manufacture's fault you don't know what you are doing. LEARN first.Sorry for the rant, but it's so typical that people who don't know what they are doing write these negative reviews. I've been building fires for 30 years and it's not something you perfect how to do overnight. You need multiple types of kindling, each one slightly larger so your fire catches each one in stages. Then once you have a fire you add slightly larger pieces until you have a nice base (hot coals) to work from. It really isn't as simple as lighting them with a match and somehow thinking that will suffice.Recipe- 1) fatwood...2) this cedar kindling....3) larger kindling (twice the size of these guys) 4) small/medium pieces of wood 5) once fire is well established, then you add the larger pieces and maintain from there. It's physics people.

Dry hardwood kindling as advertised
Box contained 1 cubic foot of hardwood slats as advertised. Pieces are about 12ā long by 1ā wide and .25ā thick. This is perfect for me as Iām using it to start a wood stove. A handful of these hardwood slats combined with couple of pieces fatwood are perfect for getting the stove blazing quickly. From there, I gradually add bigger pieces of firewood. For $40, this kindling is tad pricey, so it will be interesting to see how long it lasts. If I get a full winter out of this box, it will be well worth the convenience.

Perfect, and plenty
I use a couple sticks of this when I need to re-kindle my woodstove. I have used them when starting from scratch, or when starting from a small amount of embers. They catch on fire quickly and burn long enough to get the regular logs I then add ablaze. The sticks are completely dry and do exactly what I need them to. And the box is lasting me forever!

Great fire started, but sparks a lot!
I do like the kindling. However, as other reviewers have mentioned, it sparks a lot! I use them in a wood stove so I can close the door to prevent the sparks from flying around. But it sparks much more than any other kindling I've ever used. I will continue to use, but wish it didn't spark so much.

One-step log lighting
We run a fireplace insert wood-stove in out family room during the Winter. We burn seasoned oak logs, and use a fire starter. The larger logs take a while to get going, and we need to keep the stove door ajar for a while to supply extra air until they catch light. But with 6 sticks of kindling added, the fire lights quickly with the stove door closed. Much more convenient.

The kindling does burn nicely and works well with fatwood to start a hot ...
Very deceiving picture of the wood itself. The kindling is only 11 inches in length. I would prefer twice that length plus a little more width. The kindling does burn nicely and works well with fatwood to start a hot fire. The problem is how many pieces it takes to get a good fire going and getting your fire box good and hot so you don't risk a creosote buildup. I won't be buying this product again.

We really like quality and price of this product. I ordered early this year so we were stocked up for the winter.

Lights easy
Very good kindling, lights quickly and stays lit. The only "complaint" I have is that it 'spits', meaning you will hear a 'pop' and then an ember will fly out - not really an issue just caught my children by surprise and startled them at first.
