Thre is no solid base and if used on a roof rack Handiworld recommend buying a seperate base; however I found it easier to insert my own board or strap something to the roof rack first and then set this on that to prevent sagging.There is webbing on the sides and front which allow straps to be fed through which assist securing the bag, I've driven 100's of miles on the motorway with no issues or movement (pack the duffel bag carefully to prevent movent of items).The bag is quite large, depending on what you have in it, it can get quite heavy and cumbersome for one person to lift onto the roof rack; either load with the bag on the roof and strap down afterwards or two people need to lift it into place.Note: This is never going to be as strong or as secure as a roof box, however it is easier to store (folds down) and can be used to hold other items in storage when not in use say in the loft. It is a fully soft duffle bag with handles and zip on a nominally \"top\" side. It is a nice bit of kit though and works great on my roof rack (not bars) with about 150mm spaces between slats.
