Q: can it couple direct to the shaft of the engine?

Not unless the engine is one that is rotating at a speed of 7000 rpm while producing about 12 hp (if a gas engine) or 7 hp (if a diesel). To our knowledge no such engines are currently manufactured. The units are designed for belt drive where the necessary speed differential between drive engine and driven generating unit can be easily resolved by using different sized pulleys. Such as drive mechanism is also MUCH more inexpensive than a direct drive coupling system that can handle he necessary torque, surging load, and speed.
