I haven't read this book!
Although I haven't read this book, I feel I ought to send a few words about West. There is no evidence that his family were 'deeply religious Quakers,' and though there was a connection, they seem not to have been members. The old-time Quakers did not feel that creating images was wrong in itself but discouraged the arts as a waste of time, especially in pioneer America. If they had been Quakers who were convinced it was wrong, the boy would not have been allowed to paint.
