an interesting collection of 'origin' tales
This is the second trade paperback instalment in the "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" comic book series by DC Comics (part of their 'New 52' franchise). It collects a number of one-shot stories, which were previously published either in print or online. Each concerns an 'origin' tale - and they focus on: Man-At-Arms; Battle Cat; Randor; Evil-Lyn; Orko; Trapjaw; He-Man; Skeletor; and Hordak. It is, as such, a compilation of 8 issues (and is 144 pages long). It contains no 'extra' features. As the writers and artists differ, from one issue to the next, there is a lack of consistency - with some stories and artwork being much better than others. Nonetheless, generally speaking this is a good book - and it assists in understanding the grander story-arc presented in the series as a whole. To briefly outline this series: it consists of three main volumes, each offering self-contained story-arcs (with each building upon what has gone before), as well as a cross-over mini-series and several one-shots.Volume 1: this first six-issue series was titled “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe”, and it introduced the central characters as well as the wider world they occupy. The particular ‘take’ on He-Man presented here is distinct from earlier incarnations (e.g. the TV series).Volume 2: this second instalment was an ongoing series, consisting of 19 issues: 3 story arcs (each of 6 issues) and a one-shot prelude to the next ongoing series. There is also a six-issue mini-series titled “DC Universe vs. Masters of the Universe” (which takes place between issues six and seven of Volume 2).Volume 3: this was another ongoing series, of 15 issues, known as “The Eternity War”. It concluded in February 2016 (and this comic book title came to an end). Each story-arc (typically consisting of 6 issues) can be purchased as a 'trade paperback' collection. Unless you're a collector of individual comics, I'd suggest buying the collections.

TOO SHORT FOR ORIGIN STORY
I'm enjoying the Maters Of The Universe current run of comics and was interested to see what the origin story for He-man and two of his most powerful enemies would tell. Its interesting but feels way too short to really go into depth and sadly some of the drawings seem a little below par. The stories do give backgrounds to the villains and run canon with all the issues of the recent storylines. If you can get past the minor criticisms then any fan would enjoy this collection

Love this series
I bought all three volumes and will continue to buy the others as they come out. Any He-Man fan will love these or at the very least like them and find them entertaining. It's pretty darn violent with an interesting take on classic characters. If you enjoyed the original series or the more recent 20xx series and hated how it ended off this new graphic novel series seems to pretty much take place right after that, well kinda sorta. Or at least it comes close as it will fill in gaps left by the 20xx series. Artwork is very nicely detailed although it seems to change artists a bit which gets annoying. Expect some deaths of classic characters in this series.
