A Serious Tool for Electricians - Big bang for buck
Item Reviewed: MESTEK 1000A AC/DC Inrush Clamp Meter with 20-inch with iFlex, True RMS Clamp Multimeter Current Amp Meter for Industrial/Commerical Electricians, LOZ, VFD MeasurementsI've already acquired (and in some cases reviewed) MESTEK gear, and I've been very happy with it - great prices, solid quality, and thoughtful design. To me, this isn't so much for electronics nuts like me, but instead is more an excellent tool for professional level electricians who want to make accurate measurements - both AC/DC (I rarely deal with AC unless in Audio Amps) .This clamp meter is rugged and durable, and I could see it for use in the car, labs, factories, industrial, or at home like me. Of course, having a Clamp DC meter is almost as good as having a Thermal imager to someone like me (almost). It's SOOO useful, and measuring can be done without soldering, lol..Of course, it's for bigger work - the iFlex flexible current probe ranges up to 3000 A ac, so you can do things like measure large conductors that don't fit within a typical clamp jaw. With the inrush current meter, you can measure the maximum current at the moment when the machine is started, which helps you locate a startup problem quickly, whether it's in the motor or in the starting circuit. That's also super useful in testing old audio equipment from the 1950's and stuff where an inrush at current home voltage levels (130v at my home) blow away the spec'd 110V + or - 5% and melt vintage equipment. The MESTEK has many functions that make it a versatile tool for electricians - very convenient stuff like: . Automatic identification of AC and DC voltage(LOZ), Variable Frequency Drive(VFD) measurement, built-in Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) Detector that can quickly determine whether there is a voltage, and like my trusty old Beckman, a soft carrying case, large, solid backlight display, temperature measurement ability... The kind of stuff that has become standard but not always on your expensive Fluke.Of course, safety is always a question for heavy duty instruments that aren't a well known brand - this one is certified by CE, has overload protection on all ranges, double insulation protection, High-voltage warning symbol. It meets safety standard IEC 61010, CAT.III 1000V. So, better than my old Radio Shack meter (which shall always have a place on my bench). In my rudimentary testing, it was spot on with my Fluke (which is my standard for "at least good enough") and if the readings weren't as fast, I couldn't tell.In summary, I would highly recommend this MESTEK clamp meter to electricians, and also electronics hobbyists like myself, who sort of "collect" meters.

All your common needs in one device!
I am very impressed with this tool. I mainly needed to be able to measure amperage draw in a building I'm getting put together but I did my testing with my 220V compressor to see how it read the amps draw. The additional wire loop to do the same thing is a very nice and convenient addition to doing so that this tool comes with. That would be in case you don't have the room or ability to disconnect a wire to get the larger jaws around it. This thing worked great on that. Also having the live wire detection is good but I'm surprised how close it has to be to detect voltage with that part. I have another tool solely for the same thing and it detects voltage from much farther away and it's no pricey tool either. So I'm not real impressed with that function. This tool also comes with prongs to stab the wires like a common 12V voltage meter for vehicles so I can probably do away with my old one of those I have. Also has a little flash light if needed and a lighted screen if you desire. Definitely more features on this guy than I will probably ever need but it will be nice to know I have those abilities! A very good tool to have that can make space in your tool box down sizing the amount of tools one might have to compete with this. Awesome product!

A True Professionals Tool
I am not an electrician but used to work in construction and I can tell you that any electrician would love to own this tester. The safety aspect of this unit makes it worth the price just in itself. The ability to hang the unit up while testing is invaluable. This may be a little more than you need at home but I love mine and feel so much safer when using it.
