subtle and charming
I've had this film in 'my stuff' for ages but I kept going by it - I had a lot on and just wanted a background film so I put it on. Well, suffice to say I still have a lot on because I was pulled into this film by the effortlessly talented Morgan Freeman and Virginia Madsen. The support actors were professional and competent also. The timeline was slow and meandering but it was completely in keeping with the storyline. I have to say it was like a good book that I couldn't put down. Throw in Spot the dog and it was damn near perfect. So glad I stopped to watch it even though I'll be up all night catching up my chores!

gentle and a little magical
This is a very gentle story of love and life, in which little happens and yet where lives are gently transformed by acts of kindness and tenderness. Morgan Freeman plays a writer who has sunk into a quiet alcoholism and has ceased to write or to take joy in life. He takes a summer house with a dog, and becomes acquainted with the three young girls and their mother who live next door. The aquaintence blossoms into love and inspiration with very positive results for all concerned - there is plently of gentle humour, no threat, and a magical feel good factor. The previous title of this film, The Magic of Belle Isle, seems more appropraite than its new tiltle- the island seems to have a gentle magical, healing quality, which has an almost instant effect on its residents.A lovely film - slow, yes, but with a lingering glow

A Great Investment
"Once More" is one of those films you would want to watch again and again. Each time you watch it something else triggers in your soul. This is a film to relax with, to enjoy and learn from. Such a gentle film stands out these days and Morgan Freeman shows her really can take you on a magical journey.OK so the main character is an alcoholic writer who hasn't written anything for a while, but when he moves into a 'holiday home' for the summer, not only does he have a dog (Ringo, later renamed Spot) to look after, but also the three girls from next door awaken something deep within. The story is somewhat predictable, but surely all the best stories are.The price of this film is bonkers, for the price of a good coffee you can have a film that will touch your heartstrings - a great investment.

lovely feel good film
This film is set in a lovely place where I felt I would feel totally relaxed and would envisage myself being able to write. it is about an author who has lost his will and love for writing and replaced it with the bottle. he is very stiff and straight laced, but gradually the family next door breaks down his walls.this is a wonderful film seeing an old man through childs eyes an the man seeing he childrens imagination that brings their world to life. he has an interest in the mother although he is older, it is illustrated very tastefully. All in all this is a beautiful film about an older man eventually re finding himself an breaking free of his old wall he has built around himself, I would highly recommend this film.

The Highest Quality Schmaltz!
Who would have thought that Morgan Freeman could play such a schmaltzy role - AND get away with it! "Heart-warming" normally puts me off a film in the same way that "Rom-Com" does - but this is Morgan Freeman so I gave it a go. One of the best films showing what brings out the best in people - and it brought the best out of me!

Freeman is (always) great, but little else happens here
Let's face it - Morgan Freeman is watchable in anything, but this is an otherwise by-the-numbers and rather saccharine affair. Freeman's crippled, drunk, curmudgeonly author is tamed very quickly by the divorcee next door and her three daughters and it all ends very sweetly. Hardly a great surprise, and there's little tension or drama to be found at all.
