A Strong OUting
It''s Craig Stephen Copland's own fault when he gets marked down somewhat like in this review. His offerings tend to spend their time in the superb realm so when he sags a bit, he descends to levels other Holmes/Watson pastiche writers wish they could equal on their best days. This is a solid outing and a good read. Although the narrative sags in spots, enough is done well in other parts to cover for some lacks. To those unfamiliar with Mr Copland, get all of his books. You'll find he is top of the line.

A trip to Japan is not what it appears to be...
The Russian fleet is heading towards Japan withunfriendly intentions. There looks to be a spy, or way more than one lurkingaround, as well as a missing diplomat. All of this has Whitehall letting their tea get cold, andinsisting Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson be dispatchedto Japan post haste.Once there, things are not what they appear to be on thesurface. What looks like a tryst is not that at all. This game is afoul...Good read...enjoy.

Enjoyable Travelogue
I can't see Doyle allowing his creation to be so totally wrong about a case. Still this is an enjoyable if pointless tale.

Five Stars
Good story, and very interesting descriptions of Japan.

The ending was definitely a surprise
Very good SH read, I enjoyed it even though I generally like our hero's to operate closer to home. The writing is tight and all characters well drawn; SH and the Dr. behaviors are consistent with their fully developed literary characters. No spoilers, but the ending was definitely a surprise to me, and its "style", while not unheard of in the Canon, is seldom used.

4.5, rounding up
Very well written, stayed in character... So the lower 1/2 star isn't anything but my not as crazy for the beginning storyline. And even I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it dragged? Not sure. Still, I enjoyed the book and am grateful to have more Sherlock Homes again ☺

A great shadow of them original master
A surprisingly enthralling shadow copy of their original Conan Doyle stories. At times your could even think it may have been a prequel today some of these original texts
