A very well rounded EDC
The media could not be loaded. Vosteed has been quietly making a name for themselves producing high quality, high value knives with top tier customer service. This iteration of the Raccoon is my favorite. It's just about the perfect size and weight. It locks up solidly with the cross bar lock, which is user adjustable for desired action. It's also stronger than a button lock. Build quality is top notch. Ergos are great.14C28N steel is decent budget steel that is relatively tough with decent edge holding. It's easy to sharpen. The micarta is excellent and provides nice grip. Handle edges are nicely radiused. Overall, nothing to complain about. Probably my pick for knife of the year under $100. And well under $100 at that. Buy one. I've included several pics for size comparison. I hope this review was helpful!

Nice value knife
No, it's not one of my expensive Benchmades, but it's a pretty decent knife. I got it because I travel for work and used to take a Benchmade with me on work trips, but losing one in travel would be an expensive loss. So, I decided on this Vosteed for the role of travel knife, but it eventually became a great edc knife since its nicely made and very sturdy, but light too. This thing arrived razor sharp and holds a good edge, even under constant use. When I sharpen it with my Lansky knife sharpener, it comes out super sharp, sharp enough to give the Benchmade a run for their money edgewise. The jimping is my only real complaint as its sort of an after thought, but not a concern to me since it's not a big deal and doesn't affect my view of this knife. The design is good and well balanced. It looks good and feels good in the hand when in use.

One of the best budget knives I’ve ever owned
This is a fantastic knife. I’ve held off on a review for a few weeks now to see how it held up. First impressions, the grip is lightweight and comfy, the blade is a perfect size and comes razor sharp. There’s a little blade play but nothing notable. The button lock feels great. Not obtrusive in the hand and when closing it, there is very little to no bounce, unlike some other brands I’ve encountered. The button lock is very intentional in the sense that it is nearly impossible to accidentally disengage it on accident or in a pocket. After having used it pretty heavily, the blade remains razor sharp, the action is buttery smooth and I am having no regrets with this purchase. I hadn’t heard of Vosteed until recently but man I am excited to get another and have been recommending my friends like crazy to get a hold of a Raccoon. Just hoping that the thunderbird gets back in stock so I can give one a whirl

Good budget knife - QC issues
I bought two of these, the crossbar and button lock versions. Both knives are well balanced and the blades are great. Both versions lock up great when opened, and I did not experience any of the blade slap release issue that seemed to sometimes happen on this button lock model. The button lock itself is a little sticky and not as smooth as a Civivi, but the rest of the action is smooth opening and closing. But..........There was one big issue I ran into with one of these. As you can see from my photos there seems to be some quality control issues specifically with the handles. The button lock one the micarta is great whereas the crossbar model I received the micarta is slick with no grip. Because of the slight button stick and the quality control issues I'm giving this four instead of five stars.

Great knife
Very nice knife. Extremely sharp out of the box. Looks good. The body has a nice texture and feels good in my hand. The weight and size are perfect for a EDC knife.

Vosteed Racoon (crossbar lock) with PEI/Ultem handles - excellent EDC
This version of the Racoon knife is a keeper. The crossbar lock has decently strong springs and has worked well for me so far. I use it for everyday tasks including opening packages; plastic wrap on cases of bottled water; and for breaking down cardboard boxes and containers. It fits well in my XL hand and the PEI/Ultem handles have a good texture to them and are comfortable since all the edges are nicely rounded. The factory edge and tall flat grind make for a respectable slicey blade for what I use it for. I have a button-lock version of the Racoon with Micarta handles and I like the PEI/Ultem handles just a bit more. The PEI/Ultem texture is a bit more grippy which I like. Action is very similar and satisfying between the two. The detent on this one is perfectly designed as well. With the thumstuds, the blade flies open with a muted "tunk" sound. Only downside for me (and it's minor) is that the jimping on top of the blade is not as grippy or extended as I would like. Overall, I like this model and carry it a lot. Recommended.

Solid price for this knife
I purchased this knife since I did not yet own one with a crossbar lock. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, and I know there have been criticisms about the button lock version of this knife. I still don't know if I prefer a button lock or crossbar lock. There are features to like about both, but I think the action feels better with the crossbar. I think this is to do with the pressure against the blade. To me, button locks feel like the blade just flops open and flops shut with zero tension. The design and build of the knife is quite good, except the placement of the pocket clip. It could have been moved closer to the end to make it even more deep carry. They did make up for this a bit by recessing the pocket clip and using flush mounted screws. Another nice feature related to the pocket clip was not leaving an open depression for a pocket clip on the opposite side for the lefties. They placed a piece of metal with screws in the depression. I hate when these are left open because it looks incomplete. This is a fine little knife for a comfortable carry when a larger knife isn't suitable (I usually carry a bit bigger of a blade). The workmanship, style, and function are a great deal at the asking price. It is a knife that will stay in my collection and not be gifted to get rid of it.
