Salvatore Giuliano (Blu-ray + DVD)

Great blu ray transfer for a masterpiece not for everyone, but that everyone should watch
A worldwide masterpiece and but not a film for everyone. If you just watch contemporary entertainment, I would say: it's time to see films in a different way (see how a film can be intense, compelling, important and beautifuly made with no twist, special effects, easy gags and action, still being though and powerful), but I'm not sure you 're going to appreciate that. If you consider yourself a cinema-fan. you can not ignore that. It's not just a chance to take a look at a bit of post-war Italian story (Michael Cimino also shot a film about that, but it was an unfinished one, due to production getting in the way and basically distorting his intentions), and to an ancient environment that gave birth to mafia (watching the Godfather's part et in Sicily you'll find a lot of similarities) but it's a work of art, where a realistic tale of a true story (shot in that semi-documentarian style which will make Rosi a master of post-neorealism and also a reference for many directors, including Oliver Stone) transcend in a archaic and almost mythological drama. Great blu ray transfer

A very good film
Salvatore Giuliano lived at very troubled times, during World War II, in an also troubled place, Sicilia. Between poverty, theft, fascism, fear of communism, corruption and mafia he looked sometimes as a Robin Hood, or a fascist or a mafioso. Francesco Rosi tries not to take a side. The result is sometimes confusing specially because we never hear Salvatore and after watching the film we know about the circumstances of his life, but very little about the person or his murderers. Everything is laid on before our eyes but we have to come to our own conclusions. The film is black and white and DVD is good. I did not use the blu-ray.

Disjointed & confusing to those unfamiliar with Salvaturi, but enclosed booklet explains a lot. Storyline leaps back & forth but the circumstances around Giuliano's murder are heavily hinted at although his part in the Porta Della Ginestra massacre are not made clear - evidence proves he did not orchestrate or carry out this atrocity. Extremely realistic & spellbinding.

A classic film that still makes a interesting watch, historically accurate, the filming was not that many years after the actual events portrayed.
