really great thermometer with long range
I was impressed with the ease of setup for the thermometer. No complicated steps to get started. The wireless range was great too. I was upstairs and still maintained a strong connection.Overall I felt the thermometer gave a true temp reading and the chicken I cooked came out perfect.

Great Smoker Accessory
I've used older versions of the MeatStick for a few years and have always been happy with the performance. I decided to 'upgrade' to the 4X for the different temperature sensors and the extended range of the phone connection. I'm pleased to say that I'm not disappointed.Having purchased a new Z Grills ZPG-700D6 I wanted to try out the MeatStick 4X on something simple to season the new grill. I opted for Chicken Thighs with them being high in fat content and a shorter cook time. Setting the smoker to 275 it quickly came to temperature, and I was ready to start cooking. I was a little disappointed to find that the MeatStick 4X did not have a cook option for smoked chicken thighs, so I chose the chicken breast option which worked out fine. From the attached photos you will see the cook progress from the phone screenshots. I find the display provides extremely useful information throughout the cooking process with the temperature profile graph of each sensor being traced. Having reached 'done' status after roughly an hour I tested the internal temperature with another device and found the MeatStick 4X to be reading between 5 and 10 degrees lower. I wasn't really concerned about this, and I'd not specifically tested the other device for accuracy, at least I knew the chicken was cooked. The overall cook was excellent, the meat was tender, juicy, and flavorful. The following day I thought I'd move onto something more challenging with a longer cook for baby back ribs. Again, the MeatStick 4X performed well through the cooking process, I did become a little concerned during the foiling process as I left the device inside the foil package, and I don't think this was a good idea due to the trapped heat from the basting liquid, next time I will remove the MeatStick 4X before this step of the cooking process.Being new to smoking I pretty much stuck to the tried and tested 3-2-1 method of cooking ribs and I must say I was super impressed by the result and the feedback provided by the MeatStick 4X.Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase and would recommend the MeatStick 4X to anyone looking to monitor a longer smoking process.

Like the original meatstick but with more data, battery, and range
The Meatstick 4x has the same shape as the original meatstick and operates mostly in the same way. The app was a bit clunky and not intuitive at times when I purchased my first meatstick set. But I quickly became familiar with the UI after one or two cook sessions and in just the past few months I've noticed that the app has gotten some subtle but helpful updates. The 4x took everything I liked about the original stick and improved upon it, the additional sensors seemed somewhat gimmicky when I first heard about it but after trying it out, I have to say it's a phenomenal improvement. I ran it in a brisket and the differences in readings from the 3 sensors really gives you a better idea of what's going on with the cook. I also wanted to try it in some oven baked salmon which was just a little wider than the length of the stick so watching the first and third sensors (outermost points on the filet) climb nearly 20 degrees higher than the second sensor was interesting. The software registers the lowest temperature of the 3 internal sensors as the cook temperature so from a food safety standpoint you don't have to worry about reaching safe temperatures for consumption, the app recommends USDA safe cooking temperatures when you setup the cook and compensates for carryover cooking which is absolutely something that occurs. Everyone in our household agrees that since I started using the meatstick for our meals everything seems "more juicy" turns out everything was just being overcooked as we always erred on the safe side when it came to the food being done. Even when I was using an instant read temperature probe, I didn't compensate for carryover cooking so if I pulled the food when I hit 165 or whatever my target was, I didn't realize that sitting on the counter it continued to rise nearly 10 degrees! With the meatsick you can clearly see it occur on the time/temperature graphs that it saves. Ambient temperature will plummet while all 3 internal temperature sensors continue to march higher for several minutes. There were several times when I started using the stick that it would make recommendations that I disregarded and I ended up overshooting my target temperature. Once I started trusting it and using it as a tool to help guide me rather than strictly for observation I got better about hitting target temps, I dont worry about anyone getting sick, and the food just tastes better. As far as the 4x goes the things I love about it:- 4 Sensors are so much better than 2- The range, zero communication issues through the cook chamber, and the 4x base provides bluetooth coverage across the majority of the house from my back yard. It's a dramatic improvement over the range of the original extender bases.- The battery life, the original stick already had an absurdly long battery life and the 4x just improves on it. After a 10-hour brisket smoke the app still indicated the stick had a full battery. The only con I have noticed is the shape of the 4x is a bit more "bullet like" on the tip. The original stick came to a finer point which made inserting the stick into tougher meats more difficult. On long cooks where the meat contracts it seems like the tip geometry causes the stick to work its way out exposing about a quarter inch of the stainless steel probe. This allows the temperature of the 3rd internal sensor to exceed 212 degrees which can damage the probe. The app will begin to warn you that the stick is approaching its limit, you will have to force the stick back into the meat to keep that from happening, over the course of the 10hr brisket cook I needed to reseat the stick twice, once at 4 hours and again at 7 hours. Faster cooking meats do not have this issue.I'm looking forward to adding a couple more 4x sticks to my collection before cookoff season starts back up next year.

Better than the previous version
Compared to the previous version. Initial setup and updating was easier and had less issues. During cooking the 4x was more accurate in the beginning then eventually they both level off and read pretty much the same. Now they both have an issue with loosing connection but happened less frequently with the 4x. Second time using it I had an issue with the charger/ extender not working properly but just had to remove batteries and restart. Also had an issue with the 4x loosing the programed cook but was easy to put it as a new cook. Overall I had more ease of use and less troubles with the 4x and definitely plan on getting more. Also has the same problem as other versions when smoking meat that the ambient temp doest show the true ambient temp because of the humidity coming off the meat.

I'm not impressed
The first one worked reasonably well twice then became unresponsive. I received a replacement from manufacturer but it generally fails to respond when I try to use it, won't connect immediately, needs a long lead time before it's ready to work (90 minutes last time, item was already cooked).A buyers remorse kind of item.

An Improvement On an Already Great Thermometer
The day after it was delivered, I was able to test my 4X Meatstick side by side to one of my original Meatstick thermometers during a cook of two turkey breast roasts for Canadian Thanksgiving. It was really cool to see the varying temperatures along the probe via the app. I had no problem pairing and monitoring the 4X along with my other Meatstick. There was one small hiccup, the estimated time remaining to cook for some reason dropped to 2 minutes (vs 27 minutes on the other thermometer) and held there for almost half an hour, or until the coldest part of the thermometer reached target temp. Maybe just a one-time thing but I'll find out more in the coming cooks. My only suggestion (now that I own several versions of The Meatstick) is to have some sort of colored tag or ring that could be added to the different thermometer for easy identification. The 4X looks identical to my all black original Meatstick (luckily I have a red-banded original) so I was able to tell them apart, but on a cook where I'm using all three it'd be difficult to keep track. All in all, an excellent product, super consistent connection with the app, great range, and very user friendly.

Fantastic bit of kit!
I am seriously impressed with the meatstick 4x !With the extended range I can be sat indoors and keep and eye on my smoker in the garden! The app is very easy to use and you can also share a link to the temperature readings so friends and family can see the progress of the cook!
