She Did It! The Songs of Jackie DeShannon Volume 2

The second instalment from 'Ace' records of songs written by one of the most talented women in music - Jackie DeShannon. This compilation unlike the first compilation (which is also 5 star) spans the 60's (20 tracks), 70's (4 tracks) and 2 tracks from the 80's. There are 26 good to great tracks (72.09mins long) that cover many genres from Country tinged Soul, Northern Soul, Pop to MOR. There are loads of great names like Doris Duke, Brenda Lee, The Ronettes, Dave Berry and it's great to hear two fantastic early tracks from Kiki Dee and Olivia Newton -John. There are rare tracks from the Kalin Twins and Gerri Diamond along with two unissued tracks - one from Tammy Grimes and an unissued demo from Jackie herself from 1967. It would be great if 'Ace' could release a cd of Jackie's unissued material - we live in hope. The cd itself comes with a very informative 20 page colour booklet which has loads of pics, label scans and a track by track run down. The sound quality as usual is excellent (14 tracks in Mono and 12 Stereo). Overall, a very enjoyable overview of 3 decades worth of choice material written by Jackie for other great singers. 9/10.P.s Also check out volume 1 'Breakaway' along with 3 separate volumes of her singles for Liberty records also released on 'Ace' records.

Jackie must have written some dud songs in her time but not many and there are very few on this fine Ace collection. Better if anything than Volume 1 and still leaves room for a Volume 3 hopefully. In the liner notes mention is made of the number of demo recordings still lying in the vaults as yet unreleased. Could somebody, maybe Ace, not find these and issue them while all her fans and Jackie are still alive? I have heard some of them via releases on the Jackie deshannon appreciation website and they are of superb studio quality.

Came on time and in good shape. This is the latest in Ace Records' series on songwriters, and it's the second volume of material written by the prolific DeShannon. It's got some chart songs, including "Bette Davis Eyes," and other less-successful but still entertaining songs. Plenty of quotes from Jackie in the liner notes.

Pour une bonne leçon de songwriting, voici la bonne adresse: Jackie DeShannon était une auteur compositeur interprète de grande classe et écouter 25 artistes d'horizons divers (des Américains mais aussi beaucoup d'Anglais comme les inévitables Searchers ou Marianne Faithfull, des gens venus de la pop bien sûr mais également de la soul ou de la country), preuve du grand talent de la dame pour écrire de formidables morceaux. Tout est au minimum bon dans cette compilation grandiose et on peut affirmer que les trois quarts sont de qualité exceptionnelle. L'intérêt de ce second volume, c'est qu'il ne se cantonne pas comme le premier aux années 60. On trouve ici également bon nombre de morceaux des années 70 et même jusqu'aux années 80 comme son plus gros succès, "Bette Davis Eyes" par Kim Carnes. Cela garantit une compilation décidément très variée et donc très riche, l'intérêt étant toujours relancé par des morceaux tous bien différents dans la forme mais très cohérents dans le fond et, toujours, par cette qualité d'écriture. Cerise sur le gâteau: une démo des années 60 interprétée par Jackie DeShannon elle-même vient clore magnifiquement cette réellement excellente compilation au son très très bon et au livret conséquent.

言いたいことはデタコイズさんが言い尽くしていますので感想を。前作のBreak-A-Wayよりも時代が後になりますので、馴染み深いアーティストの作品が並んでいます。キム・カーンズの「ベティ・デイヴィスの瞳」やカーペンターズの「Boat To Sail」はよくご存じの方も多いかと思います。やはり目玉はオリヴィア・ニュートンジョンの1966年の幻のデビューシングル「Till You Say You'll Be Mine」でしょう。ソングライター・ジャッキー・デシャノンファンにとってはとても満足のいく内容です。

The Carpenters rarely appear on various artist compilations, so it's great to see them on this. Also, the inside booklet is great with personal notes from Jackie, and rare photos.
