The Penguin Dictionary of First Names

Love this book. I purchased three baby name books and this one is very practical. At almost 400 pages this book provides excellent information on derivations and associations with some fun trivia added in. Excellent resource! Of the three I purchased, this is probably the most practical and useful at the end of the day. It also has the widest/ broadest selection so if you are only in the market for one book this is a very good bet.

Great for finding Christian names when writing stories.

Really strange names in this book. It was good for a laugh but I wouldn’t recommend. I was going to return but my son spilled a drink on it.

I assumed, wrongly, that English names would be the majority. Not so. If you're looking for English names, select a different book.

Daughter and son in law found nothing remotely of use in this book

There are LOTS of names in this book..... I am looking for traditional names so was rather overwhelmed by the large number of foreign or 'names suitable for famous people!'However, it is nice to see the origins of names..

Interesting read but lacks those names that you don't necessarily think of but when you hear it you know it as a strong name that doesn't date.

This is the best first name book I've come across and I love the fact that it even makes reference to how certain names are used in other languages.
