Good for other instruments as well
I'm an accordion player, but very good for that instrument as well. I enjoy playing some of these at our local music session along with a fiddle-playing friend, who also has a copy.

Beautiful tunes and excellent information
I can only agree with the other positive reviews here. The book contains a wonderful and varied assortment of eastern european folk tunes (polish, ukrainian, klezmer, hungarian, romanian, serbian, bulgarian and macedonian). Some pieces are for solo violin and some are for two or more violins. They are beautifully played on the CD and are suitable for violinists from Grade 3 to Grade 8 standard. I would also like to mention that this book (together with others in this sereis) contains an excellent introduction to some technical aspects of eastern european folk music such as the scales, chords, position shifts and asymetric rhythms. Additionally, each section of the book is preceded by a paragraph describing the history and typical characteristics of each style. Highly recommended!

excellent buy
This book is carefully written, and helps unlock the mystery of these tunes. The tunes are interesting and varied. The C.D. is helpful. The book is good quality and stays open on the music stand and the pages feel as though they can take some wear. The music is printed clearly and is easy to read.

Good overview, Basic-Intermediate, accompanying CD
Very satisfied with the product! The arrangements are not complicated, and the author gives a brief explanation of the unusual rhythms, scales, and modes that we might find in Eastern European music. The CD is also very useful to understand the rhythms. Definitely recommended!

Great collection!
Don't let the photograph of Slovenian lake and Old Town of Bled on the cover detract you. The music within is perfect, captured with German precision and attention to detail, with nice notes in 3 languages. It crosses several eastern European borders, from Romania, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, to that elusive borderless state of Klezmer (And, of course, no Slovenia, which is even not in the Eastern Europe, but has nice Alpine lakes that present well on the covers.). CD contains all (kudos!) songs in the book, played with spirited enthusiasm and understanding, at tempo.Fiddle, schmiddle, I play this on the tenor banjo, and you should too, or at least on the mandolin. Well, ok, violin will do, too...
