A wonderfully written account of a very eventful life. It was captivating from the very beginning. Many of the stories full of historical references with an intriguing personal point of view not found in history books. Would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys modern American history or biographies in general. This book captures what a lot of history books cannot capture, but is essential to really understand our nation’s history.

As indicated by another reviewer it is as if Chuck is sitting right next to you telling his story. Very interesting the historical references with his life in the military. Growing up one of many children, the struggles and joys he experienced. His opinions, of where the world has come since he was a child, although he may not agree but has humbly accepted. Great read for younger generation to see just how life growing up was in the early to mid 1900's and how making the right choices can bring success and happiness.

This book will read like Mr. Hood is sitting right next to you, chatting over coffee. The stories are detailed and full of historical references and revelations - the kind from high school history books that I couldn't relate to. From his roots as a kid in the country to his time in the military and then his family life, Mr. Hood's life unfolded before my eyes. Talk about resilience! Made me see how we have changed as people, and a country. In the title, he posed the question, WHY ME? The answer begins to emerge through the pages as strong, specific character traits thread their way through his life. It's a good read. It felt like an incredibly interesting conversation. The pictures were outstanding, bringing the stories to life on an intimate level.
