Excellent guide book
Excellent guide book, had all the best things to view in Kyoto. Used the book a lot in our 9 day holiday/conference in Kyoto, but didn't visit Osaka other than airport so can't comment on that section. Useful information about how to get to sights - bus, tube, train and entrance information very good. Would recommend. Didn't use hotel or restaurant information much as hotel already booked and hotel gave brilliant restaurant advice.

A very useful guide for Kyoto
This guide proved very useful for a visit to Kyoto last October. The guide to walks around Kyoto are very good and help you plan your visit.

Good size for travelling
Great size for travelling, useful information and maps. Although I would have liked to have seen some places included that were a bit off the beaten track.

Rely on the local information. Good to read up before you go but not much else.
Was ok for an introduction before you go, but we didn't use it much while in Japan. The local information in this digital age is far more useful.

A very helpful guide!
Bought this for my partner on their travels and they said it was invaluable and glad they had it with them, gave a great insight into Osaka and the area and they saw alot more than they would have if they hadn't read this guide, great job!

Perfect pocket guide for Kyoto and Osaka!
Perfect pocket guide covering a lot of the sights in both Kyoto and Osaka. The areas are sorted into the major areas of interest and both Kyoto and Osaka sections overlap a bit (there are a few Kyoto sections, then a couple of Osaka sections and then back to Kyoto). I think they tried to just put the most popular sections in the front, such as Higashiyama in Kyoto and Dotonbori in Osaka. The guide, like most Lonely Planet guides, covers a lot of SIGHTS. This guide highlights a few restaurants, but they gladly don't devote too much space to exhaustive lists of restaurants and hotels - which I use TripAdvisor and Google+ for anyway. (And Airbnb is the way to go in both towns - $1000 total for the two places we booked, 11 nights, 3 people - seriously - and in Kyoto we booked a traditional, 19th century private home!)The other thing that is nice is this guide has travel information for getting to sights from central locations. For example, they give subway information, train information, and bus information that makes it easy to locate which station and type of transit works best. This is very convenient and one of the best aspects of this guide. Also it is very packed with information and very portable. Bonus!

utilissima
