The Witch [DVD] [2016]

Beautifully terrifying
One of the most beautifully filmed, hauntingly directed and performed films you will ever see. The tone of menace and fearful superstition that hangs over the piece is unmatched. So acutely realised that it almost has the ring of history about it, despite being very much a supernatural story. Eggers is a true cinematic artist, and we are lucky to have him.

A fresh, realistic take on horror.
Hi, I am a private film critic and I had to give this film a solid review to hopefully help stem the flow of its recent bad publicity in terms of reviews.I notice good quality films, and take into account plot, acting, cinematography and the research that went into it without being biased of its audience or genre. The acting was superb. And the use of old English I thought was very true to form, and though not always done correctly in other films, I feel this was an authentic take on its period. The characters were well written, believable and felt very real. Throughout the film there was underlying tension, and they didn't rely on cheap jump scares or mindless bloody horror to keep the audience gripped. Instead it used subtle moments to build that 'cabin fever' effect.Interesting and refreshing, and also a sad look on our own history, for people back then believed in much of the same and behaved in much the same way.I won't add any spoilers or what I thought of the ending, though it was an ending that kept me thinking about the film for many days after. So much so that I shall enjoy a second viewing. The only bad thing (and this is just nit-picking) was that the clothing worn by the actors was just too clean for people living on a farm out in the wilderness. It was just overlooked. If you enjoy a good story without cheap thrills that try and grab your attention too often then this is for you.All in all, I will give this film an 8.5 out of 10, and I am usually very harsh with how I rate my films.

Wait for it ...
A great film, well researched with Mancunian accents, as would be appropriate, and Biblical based dialect, this is a slow-burning piece of Folk Horror. A family leaves a religious community because they are not devout enough. The baby, of five, literally disappears whilst under the care of the oldest child. Another death; a goat called "Black Phillip"; creepy twins; accusations abound - who is the vvitch of the title? Pre-dates "Blair Witch" by a few centuries but a lot more satisfying, an excellent piece of psycho-drama.

Cheap but zero featurws
Most people buying this will likely have seen the film already, like myself. Prob my own fault for not checking, but heads up this blu ray has ZERO features. No commentary tracks (which this film is crying out for), no cast or crew interviews, not even a trailer lol. So if that kind of thing is your bag, avoid

An Excellent Film that Can do Your Head In
I really am finding it difficult to review this film because of its authenticity. I know that sounds strange, but I grew up in New England and know a lot of the folklore in regard to the time period portrayed in the film. I also did a dissertation on the Salem Trials and have a large collection of writings and documents relative to the period. What you see are ideas and images that the Puritan settlers actually BELIEVED to be real. They believed in all the dark images of the Devil walking the earth. They believed that you could sign your soul over to Satan by writing in his book. The use of animals as familiars is also true to thought, goats, not so much. The goat more commonly represented the Devil on the European continent and not in Britain at the time, however it does add to the general creepiness of the film. Some people have commented on it as being slow moving, but I think the pacing is done to build tension. The last ten minutes are amazing. Watch it and keep the perspective that to them perception was truth.
