enlightening and amazing. great read.
Wow! I've never been so captivated by a novel. I didn't want it to end.We have three viewpoint characters: Aibileen, Minnie, and Skeeter, who tell their stories mostly in present tense.Skeeter returns home from college with the dream of becoming a writer. But Jackson, Mississippi, is no longer a comfortable fit for her. It is the 1960s, the early days of the Civil Rights Movement. Skeeter's best friends are against civil rights, even while working to benefit the starving children in Africa. They place their demands on Skeeter to conform, and her ailing mother also wants Skeeter to become the stereotypical wife and mother.Skeeter yearns to write a book that will make a difference, such as one that looks at the world through the eyes of the colored? For example, Aibileen has wanted to be a writer, an apparently unattainable goal for a black maid. Instead, she has realized a unique talent in rearing the children of white families. Minnie's greatest love is cooking. And she's a great cook, but she also has a mouth that can't put a seal on her anger. And she's constantly angry and getting fired from her jobs as a maid.Skeeter manages to recruit Aibileen and Minnie to help her get enough maids to share their stories about their employers, good and bad. They work secretly, dreading the repercussions when the book is published.I love the movie, which enhances some of the more delicious elements in this story. And I love this book, which shows us some of the follow-up that the movie omits. The characters are alive in a heated climate you can feel. You've got to love some of them and dislike the others. The tension grips you as you wonder what will happen in this most segregated part of the South, where kindness takes courage.

Realistic, Comical and Unique
I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters were well developed and I could picture each and everyone of them! I found the book much better than the movie but then again the books always are!I laughed, I cried and I was saddened too as I realized people really were treated this way back then. I am glad to see times have changed.

Great Read
I weigh the reviews of items here on Amazon heavily before I place my orders, that's the beauty of making purchases of most anything here on Amazon. This book was recommended by a friend and the reviews on here were great, so how could I go wrong.I knew there was a movie of the book but I always like to read the book before the movie. I was enjoying the book so much, I read the last few pages as slow as I could. The ending left me hanging somewhat, but I know that's because you must use your imagination as to how the characters moved forward in their lives. The second I closed the book, I went directly on-line and ordered the movie, watched it that evening. I was just as delighted with the movie as I was with the book even though there were slight differences. I recommend both the book and the movie. This item was shipped swiftly and although used it was in good condition. What puzzles me is that I went on-line at my local library to reserve the book and it was not in the catalog, nowhere to be found. When my order arrived from the seller can you believe it was a library book from somewhere in TX. Very odd.

A me è piaciuto molto.Dell'omonimo film, ho solo visto, casualmente, le sequenze finali.
