This stealth fighter should be in the spotlight
As usual I want to begin my review of the set on hand with a one-sentence summary that tells you about everything important to know about the set. This time I'm reviewing the J-20 from Wange. And to say the least, building this set was a really interesting experience. So, what can I say about this jet plane?“The J-20 from Wange is one of the very best jet fighter models I had ever the pleasure to built, outranking everything comparable from other companies I came across so far.“So, yes, I am really impressed by this one.But of course there are some things to talk about and details to be explained. If you want to know more about this set, feel invited to read my complete review further below that should cover everything there is to know about the set.Rating: 5 starsAnd now for the detailed review.Introduction:When I saw pictures of Wange's jet plane I immediately liked the looks of it.But, to be totally honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect. I am by no means an expert for jet fighter planes. And given the fact that there aren't even that many brick toy sets that cover the topic I wasn't sure what I could compare it with in order to get a good impression of the set.So, I decided to do some research. As it turned out the J-20 does actually exist in real life as well.It is an extremely modern Chinese stealth fighter that made its maiden flight in 2011.And having seen photos of the original jet I really have to say that Wange absolutely nailed the look of the plane. But of course that doesn't say much about the toy yet, does it?So, let's take a closer look.Packaging: 5 starsIt's a nice and sturdy cardboard box that gives a good impression of the toy. Some boxes may have the company name “Dr. Luck“ printed on it, but that is actually the same as Wange, so don't be confused by that. My example has “Wange“ printed on it so I am going with that name for now. But there is no difference in the variants other than that.Anyways, inside the box there is another, even more stable box that contains the bags with the parts. So, what can I say? Everything is safe and secure. There is even a plastic handle on top of it so that you can carry the box around if you wish to do so.Instructions: 5 starsThe instructions are well printed and easy to follow.I never had any problems to recognize anything. The pages are well coloured and that's really all there is to say about it.It's a good instruction manual.Quality of the bricks: 5 starsAll the pieces go together very nicely. The parts of the jet have a good and sturdy feel to them, even the clear parts and the tires of the jets landing gear. The pieces hold together very well. So it was a pretty pleasant building experience. Two things are interesting about the pieces.First: Wange actually took measures to make the plane perfectly stable even in case of a faulty part having slipped through quality control. The assembly of the jet is finished by a number of differently sized plates that pretty much close off the bigger parts of the set.So, even if there were a problem the jet would always hold together. That's a pretty smart thing to do.Second: This set contains quite a number of big, specialized pieces like the wings, the stabilizers or the front of the jet for example. However this is a necessity to achieve the perfectly done look of a stealth plane.Big pieces like these sometimes caused trouble in other sets I have built. But in this case each and every single one of them is absolutely perfect in quality and execution. Finally I have to mention that there are no stickers in this set.Everything you see is printed in high quality. So, yes, I am impressed by the quality of the pieces of this set.The minifigs: no ratingBefore you think that the minifigs in this set are bad, that is actually not the case.“No rating“ means in this case that there are actually no minifigs to rate.“Wait, wait, wait, wait, WAIT!“ you might say now. “There clearly is a minifig visible in the cockpit of the jet. What's with that? Was it missing?“Heheh, the answer to that is “No, it wasn't missing. But what you see is actually not a minifig.“Let me explain. This set is meant to be a model more than anything else. So, when Wange designed it they decided to make it as perfect as possible, which of course also goes for the proportions of the plane. And, as I already said, the did really well. But the truth is that this actually leads to the cockpit not being capable of holding a complete minifigure. So Wange actually worked around it.What you see on the pictures is just the head of a minifig that is actually placed in the cockpit section of the jet.It creates a great illusion of a minifig actually sitting in the plane, but in truth there is nothing but the head. Now you might think of this as a problem, but actually, it is not. Why?Cause as I said before, this is meant to be a model, a replica of a fighter jet.You can use it as a toy and play with it to your hearts content. It actually offers some play features. But the main purpose of this set is to be a model. And as such the solution of just pretending to have a minifigure in there is actually quite clever.Wange set their priorities with this set. They didn't want to sacrifice their design for something that isn't really necessary for a set like this. And I'm ok with this. The Jet: 5 starsThe designers really did an absolutely awesome job with this plane. The J-20 may not be the most well-known jet fighter in the western world, but seriously if you want to look up the original plane you will see immediatelly that there is practically no difference.Wange's J-20 looks as perfect as it can.Building this set really is a nice experience. It is not too complicated and just a fun thing to do.The grey colour may not be everyone's favourite choice, but there is really nothing you can do about it. That is how the original plane looks. There is so much attention to detail in this model. Even parts they didn't really have to do are there. The lower stabilizers for example. These could have easily been left omitted or done with other parts. But Wange went the extra miled and made small, specialized pieces for these so the design would still look perfect. There are even a few play features which, that has to be said, are also there on the real jet. So they can actually be seen as additional details as well as play features. For once there is a door on the planes underside. It hides a compartement with two red rockets. Then there is a piece on the upper side of the jet near the back that can be lifted up.It contains a coloured clear piece.I really have no idea what that is supposed to be, but I am sure someone who knows more about jet planes than I do will appreciate this little detail as well.It definitely looks quite awesome. Finally the frontal fins can be moved. That is something the real plane can do as well.Again I am not entirely sure but I assume that has something to do with steering the plane.Oh, and the jet also has a very nice looking landing gear. It's not retractable but nevertheless it looks very nice and gives the model a really stable stand. So, what is there left to say? This is one awesome jet plane.I really like it.Final Verdict: 5 starsLet me close this review by saying once more that with this jet plane from Wange you get a really nice looking, somewhat unusual but very interesting set that is awesomely detailed and quite a lot of fun to build. At least that was the impression I got.Would I recommend it?Definitely so.I recommend this set to everyone who likes modern jet fighters. As brick toys they are quite underrepresented, so this is a good oportunity to get one.I like this set a lot. This is a good one.

fortunately a refund was quick in coming
Normally i do not write reviews but thought i should. my experience of this product is mixed. i've ordered one as a present for an XMAS present which arrived promptly with Prime.my son started building it however there were 2 missing parts which was the cockpit and also the front axle. as these are main components i had no choice apart from to pack up and send back.fortunately a refund was quick in coming, i decided to bite the bullet and order another as my initial experience of the product showed that it was well made.new one arrived and fortunately this had all the parts plus some. I think with QC at the factory this is as good as the mainstream product. I would order again however be aware of QC problems.
