We Are The Void

Another great album from this melodic death metal band

Dark Tranquillity have become something of a legend amoung their fans. Not only are they the only member of the Gothenburg 3 to still be outting good leodic death (ATG split while In Flames went la la in commerical metal land), they've been consistently supllying us with top quality metal albums for around two decades, yet to deliver anything outside the realm of fantastic. As an uber fanboy, new DT releases hold both excitement and anxiety in equal measure; excitment about hearing new material and anxiety that they might slip up and deliver an album thats 'only good'. We'll, after getting my filthy hands on a promo copy of We Are the Void, i can safely report that all's well on the DT front.Carrying on with the style mapped out on Damage Done, Character and Fiction, We are the Void is another brilliant, if somewhat familiar sounding CD from the reigning kings of Melodic Death Metal. As usual theres a fair diversity of songs like speedy agreesive numbers Shadow in Our Blood and my favourite Surface the Infinite, the stopping groove of Dreamland Oblivion and In My Absence, the stop-start riffing of The Grandest Acusation and the token 'clean vocals song' Her Silent Language, all of which are excellent and do justice to the high standards one would expect. The biggest surprises come in hideously heavy Arghanglesk and the proggy, droning closer Iridium, both of which show more a of a modern/post-metal sound that brings to mind Cult of Luna or Isis. Overall, We are the Void sees a slow encroaching of more modern metal sounds coming into the bands sound and a slight, very slight, toning down of the Gothernburg melodies. That said, it's definitely a DT album through and through. It's also slightly less aggressive then Character and Fiction with less blast beats, and perhaps more of a focus on melodies and hooks.Production, as always, is perfect for the band with chunky compressed guitar sounds and plenty of space for the atmospheric keyboards. Mikael Stanne sounds murderous behind the mic with his gargled screams and gutteral roars as potent as ever, which is surprising as he's been sounding a bit worn out live recently. Its also worth noting that the guitar solos sound a lot better then they have in a while, with Sundin and Henriksson giving their fingers a bit more of a workout then last time - excellent.We are the Void really lacks a dull moment, and fans of DT will lap this up. However, there is one obvious flaw to the proceedings, the magnitutde of which depends on your own personal relationship with the band; it sticks very closely to the template laid down on Fiction, and it might be a bit to close for the casual observer. For the first time I can remember, DT didn't really bring anything new to the playing field on this one, which is why its coasting on 4 stars in my book... Perhaps unoriginality can be overlooked when you consider DT literally invented the genre with their buddies ATG and In Flames back in the day? besides, Amon Amarth have been getting away with the same thing for years and no one's even raised an eyebrow; i think we can let Stanne, Sundin and co off this once.Fans of the band will love this and feel right at home in the void, while anyone unimpressed with their recent albums will probably not jump for joy. I, a completly irrational and biased DT fan, already love it and will probably be listing to this day after day for the next few months.

Evolution...Dark Tranquillity have changed their sound, from the quasi-blackened sound of their first EPs to the neoclassical guitar shred of The Gallery, then adding keyboards and electronic elements and blossoming into the piano/choir symphonic-tinged sounds of their newer albums. Out of all the original bands of the Swedish Gothenburg Melodeath scene, DT have consistently balanced change with tradition, without compromising on sheer quality, style and musical flair. (Eck-hem! In Flames)When I first heard the single from this cd, I was skeptical and thought that this was going to be a boring follow-up, riding on the success of Fiction, which I enjoyed greatly. However, on full listening I discovered that it is a consistent, at-times beautiful, at-times energetic and aggressive record: in short, DT put out another good record.It has all the necessary elements for a solid melodeath release - the only reason it doesn't have 5 stars is that it doesn't quite explode like some other bands or some other DT records have. Nonetheless, niiiice.

Dark Tranquillity made their best album in 2004 with Character after about 15 years of innovative death metal song writing which, though keeping a common trend was never repetitive. With We Are the Void (AKA Fiction II) this pioneering approach to song writing seems to have come to an end.The album opens interestingly enough with their first single Shadow in Our Blood which is classic Dark Tranquillity but it's hard to find anything too exciting about the song which has elements of both Fiction and Character but no real original or commanding features. To many the heavy handed use of keyboards in Fiction made the band more accessible but their continued dominance in We Are the Void make the overall sound a lot weaker. It's not even as if they are bringing anything advanced to the table, a four note sequence on the piano does not quite cut it, especially when the melody, and in fact the whole of the track, sounds almost exactly the same as a song from a previous album; take The Grandest Accusation vs. The Lesser Faith for example.It's not all doom and gloom for the Swedes though, mid-way through the album they manage to produce a few songs which have the same drive and enthusiasm that we expect from Dark Tranquillity, culminating in Arkhangelsk (which admittedly sounds a lot like Inside the Particle Storm, but we'll bypass that point for now), and I Am the Void, which delivers what we expect from Dark Tranquillity. But these songs only seem to be good because they follow a formula from previous albums. At the Point of Ignition is a good song but it bears a lot of similarities with the far superior The Endless Feed, and Her Silent Language is almost a carbon copy of Misery's Crown, even including the deep clean vocals of Mikael Stanne, who by the way, has a truly unique inability to rhyme, but bless him it still works.I don't want it to sound like I'm completely slagging this album off, they tick all the boxes of what you might expect from a DT album, but there isn't anything new here to get excited about. With this lack of innovation comes a definite sense of impotence, as though the band are simply going through the motions rather than breaking the boundaries of metal as they have always been known to do. I listened to the album about five times before writing this and all I can really remember is the opening guitar riff and the vocal melody to Her Silent Language, Character was never that forgettable, even after two listens. If you own Damage Done, Character and Fiction there really isn't much reason to buy this album. I suppose every band has to fall down at some point though.

Si durant les premiers temps de sa carrière Dark Tranquillity s'est beaucoup cherché, passant du death ultra-mélodique d'un "The Gallery" au death mélodique *gothique* d'un "Projetor", voilà maintenant une dizaine d'années que nos suédois se sont terrés dans cette niche musicale créée avec le fameux "Haven" et l'arrivée dans les rangs de Martin Brändström. De toutes façons, des formations qui ont contribué à créer le malmené "Gothenburg sound", il ne reste plus qu'eux pour garder le château et en grands seigneurs solitaires, nos six compères semblent s'être dispensés d'évoluer, du moins de manière significative. Personne ne se prive pour le dire... mais le groupe n'a pas pour autant fait de faux pas jusqu'à présent et au contraire, jouit d'une discographie absolument sans faille. "We Are The Void", neuvième album du groupe, continue sur la lancée de "Fiction" et sera donc le cinquième album à hériter du death mélodique avec claviers qui a fait la renommée du combo depuis les années 2000. Un style efficace et bien rodé incontestablement, mais qui commencerait presque à s'essouffler... Je ne vous ferais pas l'affront de vous présenter la musique de Dark Tranquillity. D'ailleurs, cette chronique ne s'adresse pas franchement à ceux qui découvrent le groupe avec cet album, mais plutôt à ceux qui comme moi, suivent leur carrière depuis bien des années. Pour être franc, d'un point de vue strictement personnel, j'avais déjà été moyennement convaincu par "Fiction" qui succédait timidement à l'excellent "Character". Je n'attendais donc pas grand chose de ce nouvel opus, imaginant une suite plus ou moins prévisible de tout ce qu'a pu pondre Dark Tranquillity en 10 ans. Et alors ? Comme convenu, peu de surprise : "We Are The Void" est conforme aux attentes, ni plus, ni moins. Aller je suis peut-être un peu dur avec nos swedish guys d'autant plus que "We Are The Void" apporte UN léger élément nouveau à leur musique. Mais ne dit-on pas "Qui aime bien, châtie bien" ? Et cet élément nouveau s'articule autour de l'atmosphère instaurée par certains passages, plus sombres et grandiloquents que de coutume, où les claviers appuient ces ambiances torturées par leur prépondérance. Les 2 titres qui ouvrent l'album ("Shadow In Our Blood" et "Dream Oblivion") illustrent parfaitement cette petite évolution, évolution que l'on retrouve ici et là tout au long de ces 47 minutes. Puisqu'on en est à parler des claviers, autant être clair d'amblée : sur cet album, la star c'est Brändström. Point. Si depuis "Haven" sa place n'a cessé de grandir, cette neuvième offrande lui offre indéniablement sa meilleure exposition à ce jour. Qu'ils soient électroniques, ambiancés ou plus proche du piano, les claviers sont quasi-omniprésents, seuls responsables de l'aspect futuriste de leur musique, et portent la mélodie les 3/4 du temps en reléguant souvent les guitares à la rythmique. Donc si vous commenciez à saturer des jolies notes des petits doigts de Martin, évitez cet album. Pour le reste, comme je vous le disais plus haut, Dark Tranquillity fait du Dark Tranquillity. Un mur de son pour la violence, quelques notes de claviers pour la douceur, des structures simples et des compositions efficaces... les amateurs du combo suédois ne devraient pas être dépaysés. On y retrouve les mêmes sons, les mêmes rythmiques, les mêmes plans de guitare, le même jeu de batterie et cette même mélancolie qui a toujours accompagné leur musique. A l'instar de "Fiction", "We Are The Void" propose également un grand nombre de passages mid-tempo ainsi qu'un chant clair micro-dosé, parfaitement adapté aux moments les plus calmes "The Grandest Accusation", "Her Silent Language", "Iridium"). Certains regretteront peut-être ce choix, et vu le niveau vocal qu'a atteint Stanne aujourd'hui, ça se comprend. Toutefois, ses hurlements n'ont rien perdu de leur agressivité et demeurent d'une qualité exemplaire, apportant puissance et émotions à l'ensemble. Un bon point également pour les gratteux qui se sont sortis les doigts du cul pour nous offrir quelques bons leads (à défaut de nous surprendre le reste du temps), le solo de "I Am The Void" et le grand moment de death mélodique de "The Fatalist" (à 2'35) par exemple. Ajoutez à cela un artwork de qualité (bien plus sympa qu'il n'y parait) et un mixage signé Tue Madsen, et vous obtenez un album potentiellement incontournable. Malheureusement, dans l'ensemble, "We Are The Void" manque cruellement de... passion. Cela reste un bon album, ne me faites pas dire ce que je n'ai pas dit : tous les titres possèdent ce petit quelque chose qui fait toute la différence par rapport aux seconds couteaux et je suis certain que celui qui découvre Dark Tranquillity aujourd'hui sera conquit. Mais à l'écoute de ces 11 titres, on ne ressent pas la fougue et l'envie d'aller chercher la perfection, de transcender l'auditeur, comme si désormais, composer était devenu plus un job qu'un art. De plus, cette évolution vers des passages plus torturés peine à convaincre et les meilleurs morceaux pour moi, se révèlent être ceux qui en sont exempt comme notamment "I Am The Void" et "Surface The Infinite". "We Are The Void" est donc un album en demi-teinte. Il s'écoute avec plaisir mais renvoie l'image d'un groupe qui commence sérieusement à se reposer sur ses lauriers. Je croise les doigts pour que nos suédois se réveillent et remonte la pente avant qu'elle ne les entraine vers le fond. Aller quoi, le dernier pilier du death mélodique ne va quand même pas s'effondrer ? Pour ceux qui opteraient pour la version digipack, sachez qu'elle offre 2 titres bonus : une instrumentale moyenne ("Star Of Nothingness") et un bon titre ("To Where Fires Cannot Feed") ainsi qu'un DVD contenant un reportage très intéressant sur l'enregistrement de l'album (39 min.), une vidéo courte mais marrante sur le making of du clip de "Shadow In Our Blood" (3 min.) et 2 vidéos extraites du DVD "Where Death Is Most Alive" ("ThereIn" et "Final Resistance").

Après le fabuleux coffret  Where Death Is Most Alive  sorti l'an passé et qui marquait de la plus belle des manières les vingt ans de carrière des Maîtres du Death Metal Mélodique, Dark Tranquillity est de retour avec son neuvième album studio intitulé "We Are The Void".J'adore ce groupe et tout ce qu'il a fait depuis ses débuts et en m'attelant à cette chronique, je n'envisageais pas une quelconque déception !Sur We Are The Void, tous les éléments caractéristiques de Dark Tranquillity sont là.Les claviers (Martin Brändström), dont l'utilisation est très diversifiée, ont vraiment un aspect fondamental dans la musique du groupe, venant magistralement souligner les excellentes mélodies, naturellement omniprésentes sur l'album. Les petites touches électroniques sont toujours bien intégrées, plutôt discrètes ("Dream Oblivion", "The Fatalist", "At The Point Of Ignition"). Guitares (Niklas Sundin et Martin Henriksson), basse (Daniel Antonsson) et batterie (Anders Jivarp) ne sont pas en reste et se révèlent imposantes, redoutablement efficaces...comme les vocaux (clairs ou extrêmes) de Mikael Stanne.L'ensemble est parfaitement mis en valeur par une production (signé Tue Madsen, qui a notamment travaillé avec Moonspell, The Haunted ou Dagoba) massive, puissante, moderne.L'album démarre avec "Shadow In Our Blood", qui annonce immédiatement la couleur : heavy, puissant...et quel chant ! Dark Tranquillity - We Are The VoidPersönliche Eindrücke:Als Fan von DT bin auch ich leider etwas enttäuscht von der Platte. Klar ist der Sound und das Gesamtbild der Songs unverkennbar das Werk der Meister des Swedish Deaths, aber für mich erreicht „We Are The Void“ leider keinen Platz in der Schublade der Dauerbrenner.Die Texte scheinen lapidar und wollen zusammen mit den nicht so eingängigen Melodien einfach kein Feeling erzeugen. Eines muss ich gleich klarstellen: Ich bin ein großer Fan von Dark Tranquillity und liebe vor allem ihre Alben "Haven", "Damage Done" und "Character". Mit "We Are The Void" werde ich allerdings nicht richtig warm. Klar, es klingt unverkennbar nach Dark Tranquillity, aber da fehlt was. Wussten die von mir genannten Lieblingsalben noch mit komplexen Arrangements und echten Ohrwürmern zu überzeugen, fehlen diese beiden Punkte auf dem neuen Output weitestgehend. Ich habe die CD nun schon einige Male durchlaufen lassen, aber hängen geblieben ist fast nichts. Es rauscht einfach alles an mir vorbei, ohne sich im Gehörgang festzukrallen, und das ist recht enttäuschend für mich. Auch kann ich der Band keinen großen Fortschritt attestieren, da zwischen dem Vorgänger "Fiction" und dem neuen "We Are The Void" höchstens minimale Unterschiede auszumachen sind. Das wäre ja nicht weiter wild, wenn die Songs umwerfend wären; sind sie aber leider nicht."We Are The Void" ist kein schlechtes Album, es weiß sich gegen den Großteil der Melo-Death-Konkurrenz immer noch durchzusetzen, aber von Dark Tranquillity bin ich einfach Größeres gewohnt.

前作「Fiction」も全体的に質の高い良作でしたが、今回もその質を維持しています。メロディック・デスメタル創世期から今まで、安定した作品をリリースし続けているのは凄いことだと思います。（同期バンドの大半はもう存在しないか、別の方向に行ってしまっていますし・・）惜しむらくは、決定打となる１曲があればと思いました。

Swedenのメロデス、10年リリースの9thフル。初期はツインリードを活かした攻撃的なメロデスをやっていましたが、中期はゴシック要素を導入、その後はその両方をバランスよく織り混ぜた音楽性へと変化していきました。前作Fictionもキーボードが大幅に導入され、かなりゴシック的な要素を感じ取れました。どうやらそれがマイナスに作用しているようです。まずデスメタルらしい攻撃性が感じられません。前作も同様で僕はそこが気に入りませんでした。本作も同様の状態で、どの楽曲も似たようなアレンジで曲の区別が付きません。完全にマンネリ状態に陥ってしまっていますね。強いて言えば、#9"I Am the Void"のような感じで全編攻めて欲しいです。

I Love Dark Tranquillity, and am a long time fan, but I feel that I can be objective enough to say that fans of the "harder" edge side of the melo-death crowd would be pleased. Not as intensely focused on keyboard melodies, though they are there, the album is based off riffs and rhythm. The production is very "In your Face", and songs like Iridium and Arkanglesk show DT's experimental side, while the bulk of the album delivers the DT you know and love, with a certain rawness to it.

Dark Tranquillity never cease to amaze! A great mix of strong riffs and drums with dark/melancholic atmosphere.Excellent edition! We are the void album + Zero distance EP in one disc + DVD with bonus material + extended artwork booklet. Definitely a must have for DT fans.

The fact is ... this is a solid release, I am glad that after many years DT has found some balance between experimentation while keeping its original style.We have seen other bands like In flames that have changed its original style resulting in many old-fans lost (and getting a lot new).As other reviers have said ... DT fans will be glad adding this CD to their collections, for those new to DT will be as well an excellent starting point.For those rating one-star:There is available on line a full-song versions of this cd, you should try it first before buying and getting frustation for what you just bougth. This can not be in any sense a 1-star work.

A very good cd from DT. They just keep getting it right.

Dark Tranquillity...Its difficult to find the words to descibe them.This album starts out strong, the intro riff is so catchy.The album goes on like much of their music, it's hard to appreciate fully the first time. Or the second, or even the third. The beauty is subtle. I notice something new everytime I listen, their albums do not get old easily at all. I can play it every day for a month and it stays fresh.Awesome!
