is there anything like an accessory that I can get to raise this monitor higher that it can go? I want to place this just behind & above my 17" laptop

Monitor stands. Depending on your laptop brand you might want a stand and docking station, although some docking stations have some compatibility issues. Like the 3rd party ones don't always work for everything they say they do. The issue I usually see are monitors not being able to come out of power save properly when using a dock. Anyways.. You should be able to find a monitor stand that you can maybe even fit over your laptop with the monitor on top. The only problem with that is you'll need to 1)keep laptop lid slightly open or 2)change power scheme when lid is closed. This is if you plan on not using the touchpad and built in keyboard. IDK, you might want to use the laptop screen too. Basically a decent docking station will give you more USB ports, audio, mic ports and it will charge your laptop. They usually hook up to a stand. The dell ones with dock and stand for dell laptops usually look similar to this: http://i.dell.com/images/global/products/latit/latit_highlights/laptop_latitude_efamily_docking3_big1.jpgAlternatively you might be able to find a stand that's used for something else and repurpose it for your uses. On a final note, A docking station may or may not be a good idea regarding the 144mhz and the ones I usually see don't have the proper ports, although I have seen some display port ones. I would just get a monitor stand for this type of monitor and if you just want things as you described: monitor behind and above. Just google monitor stands or wall mount it or even put it on a shelf or something. If you're using the touchpad/keyboard of your laptop and thats why you want it open in front of the monitor, you might want to switch to better external ones. My personal tastes because they're usually too small for me.Good luck.

Ihave heard that this monitor only runs @ 144hz when using the dvicable does this mean if i hook up a dvi to hdmi cable to my xbox it will run@144hz?

This monitor works perfectly with Xbox one, Xbox one s and Xbox one x, BUT you will not get the benefits of the 144hz that the monitor has because Xbox games are only made to run at 30FPS or 60 FPS.

To get 140 FPS you will need a gaming PC with a freesync capable AMD graphics card and they do not have DVI on their new graphics cards anymore, only some Nvidia graphics cards still have that (antiquated technology) and you CANNOT get Nvidia graphics cards to run at 140 FPS with and AMD freesync monitor, you need a gsync monitor for that.

Does the 144hz refresh rate make a huge difference in gaming?

Yes, going from a refresh rate of 60hz to 144hz makes a huge difference. I personally own this very same monitor and I do not ever see myself gaming in anything less than a 144hz monitor again. Before you buy this monitor, make sure your computer has a graphics card capable of taking full advantage of the 144hz. You also need to configure your monitor in advanced settings to set it from 60hz to 144hz (took me a while to figure it out) and this monitor does not come with a displayport cable which you need to be able to use the 144hz, I had to buy my own it was like $50 at bestbuy at the time. HDMI cables only use up to 60hz, so the displayport cable is necessary. Personally I'm looking to upgrade to a 240hz gaming monitor for my next PC build.
