Shifters GRRRRRRR
Bought 2 of these Mongoose bikes for grandson and granddaughter. Just realized that neither of them were using the gear shifters on the bikes. When I asked them about it they said they didn't work. THEY WERE CORRECT. The shifters are impossible to turn. I took them apart and all the "workings" are CHEAP plastic. Totally useless. Don't bother advertising these as multi speed bikes.DON'T FALL FOR THESE AS 21 SPEED BIKES. THEY ARE SINGLE SPEED BIKES

Not assembled well
I bought this bike for my grandson. As are all bikes that are shipped, it came partially disassembled. This was expected. The final assembly required us to connect the handlebars. front wheel, and pedals.Everything went together well enough, but the front wheel was WAY out of "true", that is, it wobbled like crazy!Since I'm not a bike mechanic and didn't want to spend 3 hours tuning the wheel, I took it in to the local bike shop. They said that they could make it rideable for about $17 which included truing the wheel and making sure that the brake pads sat parallel to the wheels. And then the bad news... The reason that so many people have reported that the shifters don't work and other problems are that when the bike was assembled at the factory, everything was WAY over-torqued. This puts unnecessary strain on the critical components (i.e. gears and bearings). So, I wound up paying $67 for a full tune-up so that the bike will last more than a year. That coupled with the extra $40 for expedited shipping made this a less-than-stellar deal. I could have purchased an equivalent bike from a local shop for about the same price and had it the same day! (And would have had a place to return it to for tune-ups and accessories).Bottom line, while the price is really low, so is the quality of the assembly. Be prepared to make a lot of repairs if you don't get the bike tuned up by someone who knows what they are doing.

Had to pay $90 to get it tuned up at a Bike shop
Bike came partially assembled. Took about 2 hours to get the bike put together. I'm an Engineer so putting things together is not a problem for me. The Gear shifters were facing the wrong way (away from the rider) Brake levers were also not in the correct position. Brakes would not release on one side. Gear shifters did not work. When I took the bike to the bike shop I had to pay $90 to get the bike rideable. This almost doubled the price of the bike. The bike shop told me that the washers on the were put on backwards and that's why they wouldn't release. This bike looks like it was put together by someone who's first day on the job. Very poorly assembled.

Good quality for the price and looks like it should ...
12 year old son loves this bike! Good quality for the price and looks like it should hold up well for years to come. Only slight negative is it's very heavy for its size. Came well packaged for shipment and had it assembled in less then 15 minutes.

Within two months the rear derailleur stopped working.
Within two months the rear derailleur stopped working and the whole assembly (including shifter and cable) had to be replaced. Mind you, this wasn't done by someone who is rough on their equipment, quite the opposite, as the person using the bike is very careful. Still it broke and had to be repaired by a professional (initial repair quotes were $150, eventually the bike was repaired for $50 by a cheaper repair shop).

Faulty Bike
This was manufactured terribly. The pedals touch the tires when you turn and the handle bars do not get tight enough. When my son ride his bike to school the third day he had it and the handle bars came loose and caused him to crash and go head first over his bike. Thank goodness he had his helmet and a bush broke his fall!!!I tried to return it and I couldn’t get the bike back into the box. I have to get s bigger box and I just gave up. So now I’m stuck with a bike that’s useless. Go to a store instead.

Perfect fit for my grandson.
Purchase a a birthday present for my 9 year old grandson (about 4' 10"). Easy to assemble and adjust (assuming you know how, that is), a bit on the heavy side (steel frame), but it looks to well built. Perfect fit for now and has some adjustment room left for growing. This is his first multi-speed, handbrakes only bike, and he took to it in about an hour. He's now going with me every weekend on some mild to intermediate trail rides, and watching him go makes me think maybe I should be looking for a full suspension bike for me next :)
