Having fun while learning
One of the best things about buying toys is parent (or grandparent) testing them. I saw this fishing toy and thought it was something my 3 year old grandson might enjoy. Here are the pros and cons:Pros:This toy encourages adult-child interaction and helps make learning funVery well made - the board is made of strong layered wood, the sides of the holes are smooth (no splinters) and the paint colors bright and cheerfulThe fish are very cute with nice paint details (except the yellow ones are so light it is hard to see the white details) and appear to be solid wood with a small magnet at the mouthThe two fishing poles are well made with a small magnet attachedThe numbers and letter are different colors, so it is easy to have the child look for a specific letter by telling them to look at the green fish, so they are only looking for a specific fish in that color.Cons:There are no instructions included. The game includes 7 cards, 3 of them have random letters and 4 have pictures of various animals, and other objects. I assume it is so you can point to an object and then have the child catch the appropriate fish to spell the word. The only issue I have is with words with double letters. There is a card with a picture of an apple and also a carrot. Both have a double letter in them, but of course there is only one of each letter on the board. Of course you could try a much easier version with the child just fishing for the first letter (or the last etc.).The game includes plastic tweezers - I wasn't sure what I was supposed to use them for. I could use them to put the fish in the board (but found it just as easy to do it by hand) or maybe you could use them to take the fish off the hook, if the child was having trouble disengaging the fish from the rod.The fish stand upright in the board so it is not obvious what letter or number they are representing. It is also confusing because the fish with the numbers are right in the middle - so if the child is trying to find a letter and going thru the alphabet on the board - they need to know to skip past where the numbers are in the middle.Bottom line: The toy is very well made and there are a variety of ways you could use it to help teach a child spelling and numbers by using your imagination and what is provided. This is also a type of toy that encourages adult interaction with the child - including 2 fishing poles. I would give it a 3.5 star rating but rounded it up to 4 stars.

Kids adore this fishing game!
Such a cute wooden fishing game set, with lots of educational options. Fun learning toy. The only thing I would change is that the numbers are set in the middle of the square, breaking up the order of the letters. The kids will figure it out, but I would prefer the letters in order and then the numbers for ease of learning for early learners. Once kids know the order, it is not an issue, but not the best arrangement when they are trying to learn the order of the alphabet or numbers.

odd features
More and more items don't come with instructions... this is one of them. The fish are very colorful. I like that the fish and the space that they fit into is color coded. You have to be looking directly down into the spaces to see what letter or number they are and that is not convenient. It seems an odd "feature" that the numbers are placed in the middle of the board and the letters are arranged around them. The magnets on the end of the fishing pole string only pick up the fish if the fish is standing straight up. If they are on their side then the magnet isn't strong enough to attach. The tweezers are fun to use to pick the fish off the magnet and place it in the space. TwoYearOld is just getting comfortable with using the tweezers. He'd rather pick up the fish with the pole and have me pluck it off the end. It's a fun way to play together. The cards are confusing and it would have been great to have some instructions to explain what the intent of the manufacturer was for them. You get to make up your own game, I guess. It's a fun toy but it could have been better.

Well made, but no instructions
This is a well-made product that solid wood, and the magnets are securely fastened into the wands and the fish. They are all bright colors and easy to see. It’s nice that it comes with a bag to put all the supplies in. I like the numbers and the letters combined.I wish there was instructions as to how to play the game and different ways to play and use the product. There is more information on the Amazon website under the product information, but as giving this as a gift. There’s no information at all to share. It is very difficult if you were looking for a particular letter or number as you can’t see what it is until after you lift it out of its container. That could be the idea of the game, but since there are no instructions, we don’t know.It would be pretty easy to make up your own instructions and your own game.

well made, magnets work great!
I bought this to give to children that are 3-4 years old. The pieces are all sturdy, made of hardwood. The colors are vibrant and attractive. I think a different font for the letters and numbers could have been chosen, just a bit boring to me, but that's my personal preference! The magnetic rods work well and it is easy, yet challenging to pick up the fish pieces!
