Love at first fight
From the very first minute I saw the trailer for Rome I thought all my prayers where anwsered, I loved ancient history (enough to do a degree on it anyway) and I love strategy games. Rome total war was like having my cake and eating it too. At the time the graphics where state of the art and brought the world alive, you could zoom into city streets and view the architecture and designs of each factions buildings, emporiums, barracks, you could view the geographical outlook of the land and who owned what in those periods and most importantly the battlefield came alive like no other game seen before. The graphic may be dated now but the attention to detail is not, spend more time than just clicking to end turns and you will be rewarded with a whole wealth of information, the game is an unboard wiki pedia with dates and evens in history and all three games adds different layers of information to different periods.Rich in detail, rewarding in stratgy and epic in scale. what more can you ask for in a game? I had to rebuy this for old times sake still showing new titles like Shogun 2 how to do things.

Worth revisiting
I've played every new Total War game, practically on the day they've come out, and I have to say that Rome:TW really does bear up when revisited.I picked up this bundle (which includes the original game and two expansion packs) on a whim, what with my original discs long lost. Even though the graphics don't inspire the same awe as they used to, this game is phenomenally good fun. It arguably still has the most accessible gameplay from the whole series, and the little historical details and the sense of period are very strong: the game can be genuinely educational even as you reshape history. The main campaign mode, where you take one of Rome's great houses out into the Mediterranean world and then turn back to claim the title of emperor, is more finely balanced and exciting than in any other long-term game of this sort, perfectly balancing structure with free-form gameplay. The AI, which has been an ongoing issue in the TW series, is at its peak here. On 'hard', the campaign map AI will be suitably aggressive.Small problems were ironed out in the next episode - Medieval 2: Total War - such as the fact that actual combat can be over very quickly in this game, with morale playing perhaps too important a role. But this is nit-picking. Rome: Total War is years old now, but remains an eminently playable strategy game.To conclude: it's better than Empire.

Probably CA's best Total War Title!
Even though this game is 10 years old now it still manages to be a lot of fun to play. Particularly so if you are A) a total war fan & B) you used to have this game a long time ago.The graphics are not as good as the more recent editions to the total war family. Also, being used to the more recent total war games (Empire: TW & Napoleon: TW), the user interface for Rome: TW & Co. I found to be quite awkward & clumsy, but I have managed to get used to it. There are a couple more gripes that I have like, the recruitment system is frustrating, as you can only train ONE unit type per turn (Campaign map). In later TW games you can train more than one unit type per turn.Unit collisions, Town growth system, The Generals' pet talks, the Family tree, unit animations in the real time battles, these are just some examples of what the game does well (& my personal favorites), & there are many examples to this effect.Apart from the issues stated above that I had with the game, they do not impact heavily on game play nor your enjoyment.Overall a well made game and by far one of, if not the best TW game ever made!

Does not work and I tried to get "patches".
Loved the game when it first cam out and my son and I played it together. That was on a computer of a few generations ago. This "copy" does not play on my recent computers. Shame. If someone knows how to make it work on my new laptop, I would give it 5 stars.

Spartans go to war against the DRM and STEAM
Anyone looking at this game on Amazon needs to know that on the cover at the bottom beside the 12 it should say this:Requires internet connection to install!!!!!!!!!!This got me very angry. Then the back of the case, which amazon does not display here, it will tell you at the bottom that the game "Requires internet connection and free STEAM account to activate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!End War was on its way and I was bringing my Spartans with me to Destroy the DRM ( Digital rights management )Luckily Alexander came on the scene and told me that everything was fine and not to worry about the DRM when I had installed. When you go to install the game it will go through the install wizard and then you will install Rome total war gold edition first and then you will need to install the Alexander expansion second if you want to play that, then your done very simple, and another thing, you do not need to worry about the code inside the case.My code was on the inside of the case below the disk. One last thing, DO NOT TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, you could have a different experience with this game and the DRM could be there. You have been WARNED.

missing instructions
Having played ROME - TOTAL WAR before I bought this version, I was saddened to find that it contained no instruction booklet. Hence, if you have never played this before, get ROME - TOTAL WAR GOLD EDITION as this has the booklet to help the first time payer. Otherwise, an excellent game.Yes, there IS a tutorial, but it does not allow random access to data and takes time to complete - many people tend to jump straight into a game and then try to work out how to play once they are in a game. There is also, apparently, a downloadable instruction booklet on the disc, which requires adobe to run. So you can either spend time downloading and printing out the booklet, OR you can buy the gold edition for almost the same price, and get it free. Up to you, really.
