Car Trouble
Back in the dim, distant mists of time I used to rent this puppy on a loop from my local VHS video emporium (ask your dad) as it continually amazed my genre lovin' eyes with its devious bent of classic horror. Fast forward 30 or so years (yeah, yikes) and the fine folks at Powerhouse/Indicator have once again served it back onto my plate with a marvellous release... but will it reveal the same ghoulish charm it so easily entranced me with back when I was but a naive youngster? Well, yeah - it kinda does.In Rockbridge, California 1978 - Arnold ''Arnie'' Cunningham (Keith Gordon) is an awkward and unpopular teen and if it weren't for his best friend Dennis (John Stockwell), poor Arnie's life would be a succession of embarrassment and ridicule. That is until he happens upon an old, beaten down 1958 Plymouth Fury (which the current owner simply refers to as 'Christine') and once purchased and restored back to her former glory - his life begins to take an upward turn. More confident, Arnold finds himself taking out the school's most popular girl Leigh (Alexandra Paul) whilst leaving his previous 'nerd-like' life behind... However, when a series of mysterious deaths begin to rock the school and sightings of a cherry red Plymouth Fury always sighted near the scenes of the murders, Arnold's life begins to crumble and with his mounting obsession with Christine reaching a peculiar fever pitch - even his last remaining closest friends begin to fear what Arnie has become...Directed by genre supremo John Carpenter ('Halloween', 'The Thing') - this is one of the better big screen adaptations of novelist Stephen King's work. Sure, the '80s was a stellar decade for the author - what with 'The Shining', 'Dead Zone', 'Salem's Lot' and 'Cujo' proving difficult for the filmmakers of that time to 'top the previous adaptation' but thankfully Carpenter knocks this one out of the park with a deft screenplay, sharp cinematography and a likeable cast that enables his film to roll along as smooth as Christine herself... Lead Gordon essays the role of Arnie very well and his character has a satisfying arc, allowing you to connect to his plight with co-stars John Stockwell and Alexandra Paul lending able support. Elsewhere character actor stalwarts Robert Prosky, Roberts Blossom and Harry Dean Stanton steal each scene they are in adding a richer tapestry to the ghoulish vehicular mayhem on display. Carpenter surrounds his trademark synth score style with stylish Cinematography by Donald Morgan who embues the movie with a hazy, dreamlike rainswept look and razor sharp editing from Marion Rothman who between them ensure each sequence that features the roaming presence of a haunted car is magnified for all its worth. For sure, this is one stylish flick and although it finds Carpenter on a more ''director for hire'' vibe, he never once lets us down and proves he is a real master of horror...Powerhouse/Indicator's UK Blu-Ray release is well... pretty awesome. With an amazingly sharp 2K restoration bolstered by pristine audio and a killer 5.1 surround track, the movie has never looked or sounded so good. Throw in a plethora of great extra special features such as a relaxed and informative audio commentary with director Carpenter and Keith Gordon, a 48 minute 3-part documentary from 2003 entitled 'Christine: Ignition, Fast and Furious & Finish Line', deleted scenes, isolated score, image gallery, theatrical trailers and TV spots - ensuring this adds up to a killer package. As I went into watching this again with my 'dubious, jaded horror hat on' - I approached with caution expecting the worst yet pleasantly surprised by how well it had held up over the years since its initial 1983 release. Highly recommended.

Great Disc of a Great Film
Great blu ray and a gem of a film. Whiles it's not Carpenter's best Christine has the tension, tight plotting and fantastic score in line with his other 80's output. The extras are decent with a pretty good multi part documentary from th e collectors edition dvd and the picture quality is the best it's ever been.

Great classic movie
Classic movie from the 80's. However the book has a totally different ending which I feel is better than the movie. Highly recommended for those who have never seen it.
