Doing the Truth in Love: Conversations about God, Relationships and Service

If you think you know what it is to be a Roman Catholic, read this book and think again.
This is a very upsetting book. Less by the end than at the start, but still shakes the image of everything from God to the Church. I need to read this at least twice. I have many questions I would like to ask. Everyone should read the book, and see need to have a global discussion. In fairness, I went to grammar school with Michael. I haven't seen of spoken to him in 61 years. He was brilliant then, and loved to make people think by what be said. I still see a lot of that boy who said be wanted to be a priest in the man who is the priest. I always thought be would eventually be a Bishop, but it looks like he is much more important than that. Thank you Michael.

Tiny flaw
The book is in perfect condition, but it came with a menโs shampoo sticker stuck to the front page..

Class book - looking forward to reading it.
This book is a key discussion and reader for an upcoming class that I am taking. Looking forward to reading it. It's short under 200 pages and has key discussions with questions as well.

Readable, inspiring theology about applying Christianity in our relationships
I've studied theology for some years, and can honestly say this is the best and most accessible theology book I've read. Himes has a brilliant intellect and this book is virtually a written version of how he lectures his classes. Although it's profound theology, it's easy to read and often even entertaining. A book that provided me with many new and valuable theological insights and I have returned to it on a number of occasions to re-read sections.

Thought-provoking
I'm doing a lot of highlighting as I read. His ideas in this book are definitely not what I was expecting; yet there's nothing I've found that struck me as over-the-top. Lots of thinking and praying as a result of some of his "if you're comfortable with 'this,' you don't know what 'this' is or means."

Excellent springboard for discussion
The book is based on discussions which took place with the author and students at Notre Dame University. With a strong emphasis on theology, personal relationships, and community, Doing the Truth in Love is about Doing the Self in Love. The chapters are useful in adult discussion groups, or in person to person discussions, for mature insights into personal/relational spiritual development.

Conversation Provoking
Very conversation provoking as Fr. Himes presents a different way at looking at our relationship with the world and our God. This book was used in our group discussions.

Stunning!
I am uncharacteristically lost for words! This is quite simply the best book on the Christian faith and life that I have read (and I read them all the time) since Herbert McCabe's 'God Matters', which I read over twenty years ago. Then I was an active Buddhist coming up to my 50s. Now I am a Roman Catholic lay member of the Dominicans in my 70s halfway through following St Ignatius Loyola's Spiritual Exercises. As Himes would say, in this life always remain restless and open to God's leading. It will often be uncomfortable but if followed through it will lead to joy. He (God, not Himes!) is the one in charge. 'Nuff said? Thank God for (leading me to this book by) Michael Himes. Read it - it is wonderfully readable and witty, totally biblically based, and very much in harmony with the approach of Pope Francis. Something for everyone to reflect on, even when they disagree.
