Stand Alone Tim-verse
Bruce Tim unleashed and uncensored. This is what happens when there is a slight shift in the past, and a great writer like Bruce is not worried about continuity, now he gets to create his own continuity. This is a new take on DC big three characters. I say the character because it is not just some shift from their past that has made these 3 characters and the world different. This is Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, but it is not Kal El/Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne, and Diana Princess of Themyscira. People in the costume are very different. The villains we are used to are not this world's villains. For non-spoiler reason I am going to leave it at that. These three are the Justice League; they dispense "justice" with extreme prejudice. Usually brutally and fatally. As they are not sanctioned they have a tendency to rub the government enforcement the wrong way. Also it is not clear who is actually in charge do they work for the president as long as the president agrees with them or does the president have to agree with them and that's it.I have to say I am not really a fan of the art work; it is good but not my personal favourite. There are lot of fight but there are also little things like in the fight between Wonder Women and Steve Trevor, she breaks his nose the is a bit of blood then he wipes and it is gone. For me little mistakes like that add up. This is a different, but good, stand-alone story. In the special features. There is the making of this feature, special look at Batman: Bad Blood, and 2 bonus cartoon from the vault. 1) Is the legion of super heroes, 2) is from the 90s Superman Animated series. All in all a good package and work the money.

A bold reimagining of classic superheroes in a 'what if' universe
Taking place in an alternate 'what if' universe, Gods and Monsters explores the questions of how to hold super powerful beings accountable for their actions and how those with power can remain compassionate and idealistic without succumbing to the age-old theory that power corrupts. In this film, each of the Justice League 'Trinity' are familiar yet drastically different versions of the Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman characters that have dominated comic books for decades, and because of the darker backstories and personalities of these iterations, it allows the filmmakers to explore new stories, new characters, new ideas and new possibilities that we haven't seen before without being tethered to fan expectations and years of canon. There is plenty of violence in this film and mature themes that are almost similar to Zack Snyder's recent DC Cinematic Universe, but the plot keeps things grounded and the characters' motivations relatable and logical. Bonus features include a behind the scenes film about the concept of Gods and Monsters, as well as two episodes from previous animated series, one being 'Brave New Metropolis' from the Superman series and the other is 'Phantoms' from Legion of Superheroes. This is definitely worth watching if you're a fan of previous DC original animated films.

An original and enjoyable tale
Ok I didn't read the description properly on this one, it wasn't quite what I expected and it took a little while to get into it but it certainly won me over in the end. Another slice of violent, action orientated animation from the boys at DC.We're in alternate universe territory again here (we used to call them Elseworlds back in my day) with unfamiliar versions of Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman. They're a rather more murderous and bloodthirsty (literally) Trinity on this world but they're still the Justice League and they're still in the bashing bad guys business - just in a different style. There's the usual villainous plot line to follow - someone is trying to frame the League for some murders that they didn't actually commit. Alongside this we get a bit of backstory on the main characters and how they came to be the "heroes" that they are. Various other familiar faces from the DC Universe drop by in smaller roles as the plot rattles along. There's the odd twist in the tale, plenty of action as you'd expect and its a relatively starry voice cast so it all adds up to an enjoyable whole.Unlike various recent animated output from DC, this is an original story, although they did release a few comic books to coincide with the film - fleshing out the world and the characters a little. The Blu Ray extras are decent and include fun little features on alternate universe storylines and The New Gods (who play a small but important role in the film itself). Surprisingly surprising springing surprising surprises
This really is very different from the usual Justice League with some completely unguessable twists and turns which I'm not going to spoil for you as they are partly what makes it so good. A Superman whose father is Zod, a scientific vampire Batman who isn't Bruce Wayne, and a Wonder Woman who doesn't come from Paradise Island and isn't... And all three quite willing to kill. It's apparent from early on that the key question is: are they actually the good guys because it sure doesn't seem that way? And just what the hell, if anything at all, is Luthor up to? I've been a fan of the DC Universe for decades and even I couldn't guess the mystery behind it all, though with hindsight there is a big clue in full view which I noticed but assumed a different reason for. This is great stuff beefed up with a good selection of extras to make possibly the best DCU full-length animation to date. My rating is on a like to like basis so don't expect anything of the calibre of Miyazaki. That said, great fun for the DCU fan.
