Airplane! [DVD] [1980]

Great fun movie , some of the humour is dated and lost on the young but great for the old

I've never actually seen this film other than on commercial TV, with regular ad breaks, so the thing that really surprised me was how short it is; 84 minutes.It's a parody of the famous "Airport" series of drama/disaster movies, filled with puns, double-entendres, misunderstandings and play on words, with the cockpit crew having names that sound similar to the kind of instructions and checks that would go on before take-ff as one example.Like the movies it parodies, a disaster strikes the crew and passengers during the flight, and an unlikely hero has to save the day, with all kinds of hilarity as he is "talked down" by a Senior Pilot on the ground who served with him in a recent war, and doubts his ability to land the plane safely. All kinds of hilarity ensues.I won't give away too much of the plots or the jokes for those who may not have seen the film, but I'll say that it is one of Leslie Nielsen's earliest movie appearances, and features U.S sports star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar incongruously playing himself, but you'll have to watch it to find out what I mean by that.Voted one of the Top Ten funniest films ever, it's well-worth watching for some light-hearted retro-based fun.
