Damn, this is an expensive tool for what it is. For what is a simple device you are paying premium price and you really want to have to want this to justify the price.And there's the thing. Actually if you have a few spare quid or you have dropped a night out then you can easily buy this tool which is quite simply a joy to use. And for someone who has a real love of woodworking and tools then the wedge spent it easily written off for the joy of using this.It is a weighty measuring tool. It has that nice level of heft one associates with quality. Bit like the way a door on an expensive car shuts. You just know someone has put in the extra for you.The machining is first class and the operation is smooth as silk. The micro adjuster is a simple thing executed perfectly. Using this makes you care just a little bit more about what you are doing. When you use this then look at perhaps your well tuned plane you won't accept a half baked job. You will make sure you are doing things well as you can.Overall a brilliant measuring tool for those of us with a love of woodworking.

This does everything it is supposed to do with the exception of having a thread with a pitch of 1/32 of an inch. If it were instead 1mm (quite similar dimension) it would be a more truly metric item where a quarter turn = 0.25mm etc. I don't know how much the tooling would cost for this but it seems a strange omission on what it a premium item.

Never knew that a marking gauge would be so exciting as this beautiful tool. I kept it on my desk for a few days just simply admiring it!. On the job it's effective and great. Heavy enough to feel solid yet easy to use.

Does exactly what you want it to and is as good as you expect it to be, given the price. Quality is excellent. Gone is the frustration of using the cheap alternatives which are little more than a nail stuck into a stick.

This is a beautifully engineered marking gauge. It's not cheap but if your serious about your woodwork then the expense is worth it. The hardened cutter gives a clean edge to work to, and prevents tearing the grain. This marking gauge has the fine adjustment and I thinks it's worth paying that little bit extra. This is my first Veritas purchase. Can't afford some of their tools but this is a good tool to start with.
