Definitely use nuts or seeds to bait the traps.
I was very excited to get these because chipmunks had been completely ruining anything left of the lilies in my yard that I had spent SO much time and money on. The first couple of days I didn’t get any chipmunks, but I also had not put any food in the traps because after reading previous reviews it does say that you can catch them without it, and I was trying to avoid killing any birds by accident. The third day I went outside and was very excited that two of the traps were closed, but that instantly turned to a certain level of horror when I realized that somehow both of the chipmunks were caught only by a back leg in each trap, and were still very much alive, frantic. Other chipmunks even kept running frantically around them as I tried to figure out how I was going to have to kill them myself as quickly as I could. I will say that it wasn’t for the faint of heart. Ultimately they were taken care of quickly, but not before I felt a bit like I was having to enact a scene from The Hunger Games movie. Feeling it was a crazy fluke, I reset the traps and expected it to go better from then on out. A while later I saw that I had caught my third one. From afar, no chipmunk hanging out. Yay for that. Until I went to lift up the trap and it pulled forward into my plants. Yup, third one by a leg. Not spectacular. A heavy blow instantly put it out of its discomfort. I tell you this because I do recommend putting sunflower seeds or some type of nut in the traps to avoid my initial downfall. I swear it was like they backed into the damn traps. Never saw that coming. I have reset them and placed one raw almond (because I already had them) sitting up sideways so it is viewable and able to be held upright by the design it’s placed in, expecting that this would sure fire get them to discover head first, not a glancing catch by running by. Today I am happy to see that two more traps had success at completely enclosing the top half of their body and head, and they had already expired when I went out to dispose of them. The traps are a very easy release and reset without touching them at all. So I thought that I would write this so that anyone else purchasing will see that it really is in your best interest to put some sort of seed in the trap so you don’t have to walk out and humanely kill them yourself as I did, prior to using the food. I’ve zero worry that I will be catching any more by the leg as they run by now that the food is there, and it is now smooth sailing. Not in time for some of my lilies, which may not even come back next year they were demolished so badly, but I will be able to continue to reuse the 6 traps I bought and spread out with each year. I had never had a chipmunk problem before, but they were in such numbers that even the squirrels don’t come around anymore. Previous to trying these traps it is worth noting that I did try putting a large amount of cayenne pepper around the plants they were going after most fiercely, but even after buying a bulk sized one from BJ’s, the only thing that got me was moldy cayenne after rain. The only reasons I had not tried poison as some had told me, dropped into their holes, was again that I didn’t want to kill birds, and they had such an expansive amount of holes around my plants and eating them from underground that it seemed prudent to try these. Now that I understand why it is in your best interest to use seeds/nuts, that is the only way I’ll be using them moving forward, and it’s no mess. Also, I had been concerned about whether or not these would be large enough based on all of the different traps that you see, and I had almost bought some that were half the size that said they were more for mice, But I am very glad that I purchased the larger ones. At six dollars apiece I may have been able to get started with maybe four traps instead if I had gotten them sooner, but the damage in my yard was so bad that I went ahead and purchased six so that I could solve the issue as quickly as possible at this point. They are definitely worth the money and I am glad that they operate as cleanly as they do for removal. Because they are not like a regular mouse trap, there is no blood with the traps, and they are clean disposal without touching the chipmunks. Very easy, and I do angle them towards my fence so I am not likely to have a bird instead. I am at five chipmunks right now, and now that I see food is the way to go with them, that is the only way I will use them here on out to be certain they are caught the way you want them to be. I will continue to use these through this season and then store them to bring them out after winter again. They work very well, and they are solid units which will last a while by what I’ve seen. My only regret is not getting them sooner and putting food in right away… Do that and you will be good to go before the chipmunks eat all of your plants, as they devastated mine.

Affordable and effective for chipmunks
Concerned about our chipmunk problem, we bought one of these larger rodent sized traps hoping it would be easy and not messy. In the last 48 hours we've successfully caught 3 chipmunks and a vole (a small mole-like rodent). The kill is clean, easy, and very effective. It does feel like the spring might be getting weaker, because it takes a couple tries now to reset it. It's still usable, but will keep an eye on how much longer it will work effectively.Couple things to keep in mind:- While they call it a humane trap because it is meant to quickly suffocate the catch, it's not instantaneous. We happened to see it catch the first one, and the chipmunk did wriggle and struggle for about 30 seconds until it stopped breathing. It's not something you want kids to see and may even turn off some adults.- Given the potential for this delayed death, I highly recommend using a piece of string to tie it to something like a tree or patio chair so the rodent won't be able to retreat with it. There is a loophole on the back of the trap so you can easily do this.- We used a small amount of peanut butter spread thin on the center of the bait area. Don't use too much, or the chipmunks can lick some without setting off the trap. You want them to get their full body weight on the spring plate trying to eat the bait.- If you use peanut butter, don't put the trap right up against house or anywhere you don't want ants. The peanut butter will attract ants, so you may want to be prepared for dealing with those once you get rid of the rodents.UPDATE 7/1/14:We thought we had caught all the chipmunks (the 3 mentioned above), however it appears we have not. We saw one yesterday in the garden, so this morning we set the trap again with peanut butter and within 3 hours we had a 4th chipmunk! One of its friends/family members came out to see what was going on, so unfortunately we know we have yet another critter to catch. Resetting the trap!UPDATE 6/22/15:This trap is the most reliable we have ever used, hands down. We saw another chipmunk this morning, so we got the trap out, baited with a tiny bit of peanut butter, and had caught another chipmunk within 2 hours. Unbelievable! Reset it again (didn't even add more bait), POP! A 2nd chipmunk within 4 hours. This is the same trap we bought and used last summer - we stored it over the winter in our garage. We hosed it down before we packed it away and so it was ready to pull out today as soon as we needed it. Seriously, this is a no-brainer. Get this trap! If you follow the advice in these reviews, it should definitely work.UPDATE 7/14/15:Saw another critter - do they ever go away?! Set the trap a few days ago baited with peanut butter and caught nothing but swarms of ants. Rebaited it 3 times over the last 3 days and finally today after the rain had cleared away most of the pesky ants, the trap was sprung by another chipmunk. I will admit, I was beginning to get impatient after almost 3 days given past performance of catching the critters in only a few hours. But if you are patient, and make sure your trap location and bait is optimal, they will come!UPDATE 9/21/15:And another chipmunk has been effectively caught within hours of baiting the SAME trap that is now over 1 year old. We are now noticing that the spring mechanism is getting a bit looser and far more touchy. But we're still able to set the trap with a little bit of patience and finesse. At $8-10 per trap, even if it lasted only 1 season I feel we definitely got our money's worth out of it. We'll keep using it until it no longer sets properly or becomes unsafe to our own fingers. But just in case, we have just purchased a 2nd trap to keep on hand.

Works on both chipmunks and destructive Red squirrels
Birds like sunflower seeds so you need hide the traps so that birds don't get into them. You don't want to add to the death of birds that are already declining terribly through cat attacks, Hawks and pesticides. I place mine under my patio furniture that has covers so the chipmunks go under there but the birds do not or lean a long narrow board along a wall and put the trap behind it. When I first got them I caught a bird (Titmouse) in one and it broke my heart. Please hide the traps where birds can't get into them because they will if you put a sunflower seed on it. I caught 111 chipmunks my first year using them 100 the following year and last year 89 but I quit earlier. I also caught 3 red squirrels last year and probably about the same the first two years.......they are extremely destructive also (ate the siding on our house, Trex steps and lots of other stuff). This year the Chipmunks are eating my prized Japanese Maple tree buds the tree is completely bare in the crown about two thirds of the way down.....I hope it survives. I just ordered 5 more Better Rodent traps they work great for most of the summer but then the spring starts to wear and they won't stay open so you can adjust the spring by taking it off and putting it on again but turn it a bit so the part of the spring from the bottom under the trap is then on top and it will work a while longer. I tried to live trap but it became a full time job relocating them to the park across the river. They had destroyed our backyard stacked wall digging behind it....it collapsed and we had to redo it at a huge cost......it breaks my heart to kill them they are so cute but oh so destructive.
