Product Description ED glass, dielectric high-reflective mirror coating, and phase correction coating work together to deliver sharp, bright images. Taking full advantage of Nikon’s long successful history in optical technology, the Monarch 5 binoculars are evidence alone of the sophistication and expertise used to create such high performing sports optics. Designed to give lovers of the outdoors the chance to observe nature in all its spectacular glory, the Monarch 5 series reveal the smallest details, even under the most challenging light conditions. Whether you are stargazing, hiking up a rain swept mountain, or taking a voyage to spot marine life, these versatile, rugged binoculars will provide a clear view and captivate the moment perfectly.Highly Acclaimed PerformanceExceptional image quality is realised across the Monarch 5 range with an advanced lens and roof prism construction. The objective lens diameters of 42mm or 56mm, combined with magnifications from 8x to 20x suit an array of situations to ensure you get the best possible view. Employing Nikon’s legendary ED glass to minimise chromatic aberrations, images of superior contrast and outstanding resolution are delivered. For excellent light transmission across the visible range, dielectric high-reflective multilayer prism coatings offer bright, sharp images with natural colours even in poor light conditions. A phase-correction coating is also applied to guarantee high resolution images at any distance.Highly DurableMade for intense use even under formidable conditions, Monarch 5 binoculars are extremely practical with all models using waterproof and fog-free construction. With a robust housing, the binoculars are waterproof up to 1 metre for 10 minutes, and to prevent fog or mould from forming inside the optical system, Nikon have used nitrogen gas, so a sudden change in weather won’t cloud your view.Categories covered by the Monarch 5 SeriesOutdoors, Camping, HikingDurability and portability are the perfect combination when enjoying rugged outdoor activities. Best sellers for a reason: Good quality, not too expensive to use.
Nice build quality, well made, bright images, good colour quality.Using these compared to the smaller 'travel' sizes is a bit like seeing something in HD for the first time.If you wear glasses, you can still use these with no problem at all - that's how I use them). If you don't wear glasses, then the 'pop up' eyepieces work a treat and feel nice and solid. The bins are purged with nitrogen, meaning they are waterproof, and the internals surfaces will not fog up. The external lens surfaces of any binocular can fog up... if they do it is no big deal ( just wipe them with a soft cloth, or wait for the bins to come to ambient temp... then fogging should disappear). There is a dioptre adjustment on the right lens to fine tune the view... (focus on something using just your left eye and the left bin lens... then look with just your right eye and right lens at the same thing, and move the dioptre adjuster until it is in perfect focus with your right eye... Hey presto: when you use both eyes, you should be getting the best focus possible). The dioptre adjuster is nice and stiff, it shouldn't easily get knocked out of adjustment. These comes with case, lens covers and a neck strap. The supplied case is light, good enough quality, it has a belt loop on it and a velcro fastening. The supplied neoprene neck strap is solid enough and comfortable to use ( these bins feel like quality, but are not 'too heavy' to carry for long periods). You do have to fit the strap yourself though... a little bit fiddly. The objective lens covers are the 'pop in' type - they seem like a good fit, and stay put ( more important than the eyepiece cover, in my view). If you don't like them hanging down whilst you are using the bins, you can remove these altogether...be careful not to lose them though. The rainguards ( that cover the eye pieces) is a hinged one piece affair: it simply presses on. If you are clever, you will notice there is a loop to fit these to the neck strap, which is good, because they can come off easily, but it's hardly worth mentioning really,I bought these after comparing them to 'professional grade' bins costing 3 times more (Zeiss Conquest HD and Leica Trinovid)... then being surprised that I couldn't really tell the difference in the image quality. My eyes are not perfect, so your own experience may vary. If you are a regular presenter on BBC Countryfile, you might want the 'professional' ones...

Crystal clear, they're like HDTV!
We spent some time investigating binoculars; if you're going to spend this kind of money it's not an impulse buy. Extensive internet research narrowed down the magnification we needed to 8x or 10x, but when we tried them out locally we found the higher magnification made it harder to keep a bird in the centre of view. Some of the more expensive binoculars we rejected because they were more tricky to hold, being a quite slippery hard plastic. These have a soft touch rubberised 'armour' casing which means they're easy to hold firmly, and don't slip through your fingers. We bought them for an upcoming trip to Norway for watching wildlife, and have been trying them out bird watching from our 3rd floor flat. The neckstrap is padded like our Nikon DSLR camera, and they have the same quality build and feel. Wearing glasses can be a problem with binoculars because the distance from the eye cup to the viewing angle is often wrong, but the eye cups on this pair swivel in and out so that you don't lose any of the field of view. We've both found that we can easily focus without removing our specs. There are objective lens covers which attach to each one and flip down, so shouldn't get lost like completely removable covers. The cover for the eyepieces is an all-in-one plastic thing, not so good in all honesty. But all of this is nothing if the glass inside is poor quality. It's not - it's fabulous, providing a very bright clear image that's like watching a nature programme on TV. It's really very, very good! We have a 20-60x spotting scope (not Nikon) on a tripod which we use to watch boats in the harbour, but the glass is nothing like as good, with considerable aberration at the edges. The weight is not uncomfortable, we've taken them on walks and they're absolutely fine. A really minor negative is the storage bag which is way too loose, perhaps made for the whole range rather than these specific binoculars. We are absolutely delighted with this pair of binoculars, they really are awesome. Can't wait to take them to Norway!

VERY GOOD OPTICS FROM NIKON
Great ED binoculars and pin sharp. I purchased them to replace my old Swift ones which I've had for forty years. They are just the right size and weight as I'm getting on a bit now. I'm a big fan of Nikon and these optics are excellent without having to pay £2k for some of the top brands.
